Federal agency warns of genetic testing scam

SANDUSKY — Authorities are warning people to avoid a "free" genetic test scam that could cost people thousands of dollars.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently issued an alert about a fraudulent genetic testing scheme, according to a news release."Scammers are offering 'free' genetic tests and claiming Medicare will cover it — so they can get your Medicare number and use it to commit fraud and identity theft," the release states. "They're targeting people through telemarketing calls, health fairs and even knocking on doors."Scammers are sending out cheek swabs through the mail, along with offering in-person screenings, according to the release.Aside from having their identity stolen, the federal agency said that if someone makes a Medicare claim for a test or screening that wasn't ordered by a doctor or medically necessary, the claim could be denied. That means that a person is responsible for paying the full cost of the test, which could range in the thousands of dollars.Sue Daugherty, director of the senior advocacy group Serving our Seniors, said she hasn't heard about this scam happening locally.
