Police identify man who drowned in Sandusky Bay Wednesday evening

SANDUSKY — Sandusky police have identified the man who drowned Wednesday evening in Sandusky Bay.The man who drowned is Brandon Ellis Stegall, 23, 2244 Olds Street, police said. Update 11:20 p.m.SANDUSKY — A 23-year-old man died in Sandusky Bay off Cement Avenue near Lions Park Wednesday evening.The identity of the deceased is not yet available, but Sandusky police said the victim is a city man.Sandusky fire Capt. Jim Green said two men in their 20s, including the victim, were on a Zodiac boat driving back to shore at about 6 p.m.Police said the victim voluntarily left the boat while it was offshore and went into the water but was not able to stay above the surface. The other person on the boat, another man, tried to help the victim but was unable to sufficiently assist, so he went ashore and called 911.A Sandusky fire rescue boat and its dive team quickly got to the scene and began to search for the missing man. They found his body at 7 p.m. about 30 yards offshore in 10-foot-deep water, Green said.They immediately started CPR and the victim was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center by ambulance.*Update 9:30 p.m.A person died in the Sandusky Bay off Cement Avenue Wednesday evening.The identity of the deceased person has not yet been released but Sandusky Fire Captain Jim Green told the Register the victim was a man.Check back for updates. Update 7:30 p.m.Sandusky police Officer Brad Wilson said a person was recovered from the bay and taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center. The person's status was unknown as of 7:20 p.m.Update 7:15 p.m.It appears someone was pulled from the water and was put on an ambulance, which left the scene.
