Cody Thompson agrees to deal with Kansas City Chiefs

Cody Thompson didn't hear his name called in the NFL Draft, but the wide receiver will still get a shot to play at the next level.Thompson, a Huron High School graduate who went on to set records at the University of Toledo, has agreed to a free-agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Player First Sports agency, which represents Thompson."Been here before, nothing I'm not used to! Time to get to work... gonna go take my spot," Thompson tweeted Saturday night as the draft ended.Kansas City could be a great fit for Thompson. The Chiefs, who lost in overtime to New England in the AFC Championship Game last season, have suspended leading receiver Tyreek Hill, who is the focus of a domestic abuse investigation. The team's second-leading receiver, Sammy Watkins, caught only 40 passes last season. The Chiefs took one wide receiver in the draft — Georgia burner Mecole Hardman (second round). The Chiefs, of course, have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Pat Mahomes, who will be entering his third season in the league.Thompson, who was a lightly recruited player coming out of high school, finished his career at Toledo with 181 receptions for 3,312 yards and a school-record 30 touchdown catches."Whether it's late (rounds) or after the draft, it doesn't matter," Thompson told the Register earlier this week when asked about his draft prospects. "I still have to work for that spot. Just like Toledo gave me the opportunity — the only team in the country to do that — whatever team decides to give me an opportunity, I'm going to make sure they're rewarded."Two of Thompson's former teammates were taken in the draft, including wide receiver Diontae Johnson, his roommate at Toledo.Twenty-seven receivers were selected among the 256 picks in the draft.Bowling Green wide receiver Scott Miller was one of five Mid-American Conference players taken in the sixth round of the draft on Saturday.Toledo's Cody Thompson blocked a punt and scored in the Rockets' 2018 opener against VMI.
