Two escape burning Hayes Avenue home

SANDUSKY — Two Hayes Avenue residents escaped a Thursday morning home fire unharmed.The fire started after 6 a.m. in the 1100 block, near Firelands Regional Medical Center, according to the Sandusky Fire Department.Captain Jim Green said firefighters were met with "heavy fire" coming from the back of the home. Two people were in the home when the fire started, but both escaped uninjured.Fire broke out at this Hayes Avenue home, near Firelands Regional Medical Center, after 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24. The fire was under control within about 20 minutes, Green said. Firefighters believe the blaze started in a furnace room, but Green said the exact cause is still under investigation.The fire department estimated at least $30,000 of damages caused by the blaze."There was extensive fire damage to back of the house and extensive heat and smoke damage through rest of structure," Green said.Five Sandusky Fire units responded to the scene, Green said.
