Update: Steel Vengeance reopens after shutting down Friday

Update (1 p.m. Saturday)SANDUSKY — Steel Vengeance resumed operations late Friday night and opened as scheduled Saturday morning.Original story (11:15 p.m. Friday)SANDUSKY — At about 3 p.m. Friday, a Steel Vengeance train at Cedar Point was approaching the station.The ride's drive system in the final brake run, which consists of motors and tires, among other components, made a loud sound and detached from the system, falling to the ground in an enclosed area.The ride stopped, as designed, and all riders were escorted off without incident.Tom Welch, a regular visitor to Cedar Point, happen to be on the Steel Vengeance train where the incident occurred."We came into the break run at the end of the ride, and there was a loud 'bang,' and the train came to an abrupt stop," Welch said. "As we we're being evacuated, I noticed one of the brake fins was bent sideways. I'm not sure if the wheel came off and bent the brake fin, or the brake was bent and hit the wheel and broke it off."After being evacuated from the ride safely, he proceeded back to his vehicle to retrieve his phone, since guests are still not allowed to bring cellphones into the Steel Vengeance queue.Upon returning to the ride area, he saw a maintenance worker place the discarded wheel assembly under the station near the transfer assembly.
