Earn your wings with RC airplane club

VERMILION — A fun hobby is taking off in Vermilion.Founded in 2014, Landing Zone Remote Control club, started in Huron. The club eventually needed a new field, so club vice president and treasurer Marc Daniels talked with a local farmer and pilot, Carl Krueger. After looking at several spots on Krueger's properties, the club relocated to a field off Thompson Road in Vermilion in 2017.The club, which has 35 members, gathers at the field monthly to fly their radio-controlled airplanes."We like to gather for fellowship," club secretary Jeff Williams said. "Sometimes we get together and not everybody flies. We just enjoy hanging out with each other."Members work together to help anyone who is new to the hobby by teaching them how to fly.Club president Bill Turton said he has fun flying his radio-controlled airplanes and being outside."I remember my parents telling me when I was younger that it was too expensive," Turton said. "Then I got older and it's like being a big kid with a new toy. It's enjoyable."Daniels has been flying radio-controlled airplanes for about 45 years. He's always loved airplanes because his dad was a pilot. When Daniels was 13-years-old, he was introduced to a man who flew radio-controlled airplanes. Daniels said he was interested right away."Within two years, I had my first airplane," Daniels said.Not only does Daniels enjoy flying the airplanes, but he also likes the building process."To build something yourself and to get out there and fly it, that's pretty neat," Daniels said.
