Be outraged right here, right now

The outrage in response to seeing photos of families being separated, children in cages and hearing their anguished cries on digital recordings smuggled out of a detainment camp are understandable. That is not the America we are or the America we want to be.This is the "flavor of the month" for the media, and it is right that it is exposed.But there are so many examples of abuse of children and families, so many opportunities to be outraged. The opioid crisis, launched intentionally by pharmaceutical companies without regard to the addictiveness of these drugs, without regard to the harm it would cause and without consequences.The ravages of the addiction era wrought by the profit-over-decency marketing techniques used by manufacturers and distributors of pain medications will be with us for the foreseeable future, for the rest of our lives, and still there is no accountability.Where's the outrage from seeing children forced into a foster care system not anywhere near adequate to the challenge?Overwhelmed as it is, the system is not fair or caring for victims caught by this plague the way it ought to be.Where is the compassion for them?Where's the compassion for grandparents raising families of their dead children?Where's the outrage for children — in this nation and in this county — who go to bed hungry each night or malnourished?Where is the outrage at a food chain that makes toxic food more available to poor people than nutritious food, resulting in lifelong, preventable illnesses?Where is the outrage at having an infant mortality rate among the highest in the nation?If we've learned one thing as a nation in the last couple of weeks, it's that parents repudiate the mistreatment of children. They don't bother to know where a child was born, where they come from or the circumstances of their detainment. They simply repudiate a policy or a practice of putting children in cages, and it doesn't matter who's children they are.But the abuse of children is widespread. It's all around us. And we must be outraged by it also.
