Edison student gets felony for bringing knife to school

MILAN — A 14-year-old Edison student was arrested after allegedly bringing a knife to school Tuesday, according to the Erie County Sheriff's office.The student was charged with fifth-degree felony illegal conveyance of deadly weapon or dangerous ordinance into a school safety zone.Erie County Sgt. Dan McGlothlin said the student made a comment about a knife being in a coat pocket at lunch. When someone asked about the knife, the student allegedly pulled it out and exposed half of it. Other students saw the knife and reported it to a principal, who brought the student into his office.The school did not take any emergency actions, such as going under lockdown, McGlothlin said. The knife, a camouflage-colored Bowie knife, was confiscated."(The student) didn't threaten anybody," McGlothlin said. "(The student) never pulled it out and didn't make any threats to students or faculty."When questioned, the student claimed to forget the knife was in the pocket, McGlothlin said."In light of all stuff going on recently, someone went to (the) principal ... nothing is taken lightly anymore," McGlothlin said.The student was taken to the Erie County Juvenile Justice Center in Sandusky.
