Former Put-in-Bay cop under investigation

PUT-IN-BAY — A former Put-in-Bay police officer is under criminal investigation for allegedly using force improperly while on duty.El'Shawn Williams was placed on administrative leave shortly after the August incident, Put-in-Bay Lt. Doug Miller told the Register.It's now known what exactly Williams is accused of doing, or why it warrants a criminal investigation."We initiated this investigation," Miller said. "We asked the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office to look into this so we can stay transparent."Williams, who was hired by the department this past spring, has since resigned from the department."He was one of our shift leaders and he helped train new hires," Miller said. "He held a supervisor-type role."The incident remains under investigation.Williams was one of the several Put-in-Bay officers who responded to a standoff on June 27 at the home of island resident Keith Blumensaadt.WATCH: Dramatic standoff ignites between Blumensaadt and PIB policeWilliams attempted to pull Blumensaadt over for a traffic stop, but he allegedly refused and continued driving to his home on Langram Road.Police body camera footage shows Williams step out of his cruiser in Blumensaadt's driveway, but quickly retreat into his car and back away. A person driving by the house on a golf cart can be heart just moments later telling Williams that Blumensaadt was holding a firearm.An hours-long standoff ensued between Blumensaadt and Put-in-Bay police. Ottawa County Sheriff later diffused the situation and arrested Blumensaadt.The arrest of Blumensaadt is not related to the investigation into Williams' alleged actions.
