Boy, 15, in custody after threatening to 'shoot up' Edison High School

MILAN — Deputies arrested a 15-year-old boy who threatened to bring a gun to Edison High School on Thursday.The boy, a freshman at the school, did not have a gun on him when deputies took him into custody on Thursday morning, Erie County Chief Deputy Jared Oliver said. He told deputies that his statement, made to classmates in the library the previous day, was intended as a joke.Authorities didn't see it that way."That's not a joke," Oliver said. "We take it very seriously."School and law enforcement officials began investigating the threat around 7 a.m., Oliver said, when concerned parents brought the statement to their attention. The boy had apparently told his classmates that he intended to "shoot up" the school.When Principal Jeff Goodwin was unable to immediately reach the boy's mother by phone, according to an Erie County Sheriff's Office report, Goodwin and a deputy intercepted him in the cafeteria as soon as he arrived at the school. The boy, who spoke to officials in the principal's office, admitted to making the statement, according to the report. He was adamant that he did not intend to alarm anyone.The boy is being charged with aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor, in relation to the incident.Oliver said the boy is on probation for assault and truancy offenses in Huron County. As of Thursday, the boy was in custody at the Erie County Juvenile Detention Center.The arrest comes just over a week after Perkins police arrested another man who threatened a local school. Shane Andrews, 19, faces the same charge in connection a statement directed toward Perkins High School that he posted on social media days before his arrest.Andrews is an Ashland resident who graduated Perkins High School in 2015.Andrews, too, threatened to bring a gun to his former school. The statement prompted increased security at each of four schools in the Perkins Local School District on the morning of Jan. 4.Perkins police Chief Ken Klamar said detectives caught up with Andrews in Ashland, where he cooperated and where detectives found no weapons nor indication that he intended to cause harm. Klamar said Andrews admitted to making a comment that he acknowledged he should not have.Andrews had been slated to appear in Sandusky Municipal Court for an arraignment last week.
