Edison High School student arrested after bringing knife to school

MILAN — Erie County deputies arrested a 16-year-old Edison High School student this week. The boy allegedly threatened a classmate with a knife in the school cafeteria.Speaking in the principal's office beside a parent, the boy admitted to deputies that he had carried a knife clipped to the waistband of his pants throughout the 2016-2017 school year, according to a sheriff's office report. He told deputies he does this for protection, citing numerous school shootings across the country.While he generally kept the knife concealed under his shirt, he told deputies, some students had seen the clip, so he had discussed it with them.Regarding the accusation that he had threatened another student, the boy told deputies that he got into an argument Tuesday with a classmate who he said sat in a chair that he had been sitting in earlier. He said that classmate asked him if he would pull out the knife.The principal relayed that two students had described the boy then pulling the knife out, unfolding it and brandishing it at the classmate with whom he was arguing. But the boy denied that accusation, according to the report.He admitted that, at one point during the argument, he reached for the knife "only to make sure that it was still in its place and concealed," according to the report.Deputies charged the boy with aggravated menacing, carrying concealed weapons and as a delinquent child, according to the report. He was taken to the Erie County Juvenile Justice Center.
