More than two dozen homes in the Village Green neighborhood in Huron were evacuated Thursday morning after workers installing a drain struck and damaged a gas line.

The Huron Fire Department began evacuating homes in the 900 block of Strowbridge Drive and the 900 block of Salem Drive shortly after 10 a.m.

Columbia Gas spokesman Chris Kozak said that the gas company had the line "made safe" by 12:42 p.m. He said a third-party contractor doing work in the neighborhood nicked a two-inch plastic main line that provided gas to homes on the street.

He said no customers lost service during the line break and no one suffered any injuries. The area has now been deemed safe, and residents are allowed back to their homes.
