Mourners urge black Americans to take action

Michael Brown's cousin tells crowd to let their voices be heard at voting booths
Associated Press
Aug 25, 2014

The mourners filled an enormous church to remember Michael Brown — a "gentle giant," aspiring rapper and recent high school graduate on his way to a technical college.

But the funeral that unfolded Monday was about much more than the black 18-year-old who lay in the closed casket after being shot to death by a white police officer. The emotional service sought to consecrate Brown's death as another in the long history of the civil rights movement and implored black Americans to change their protest chants into legislation and law.

"Show up at the voting booths. Let your voices be heard, and let everyone know that we have had enough of all of this," said Eric Davis, one of Brown's cousins.

The Rev. Al Sharpton called for a movement to clean up police forces and the communities they serve.

"We're not anti-police. We respect police. But those police that are wrong need to be dealt with just like those in our community that are wrong need to be dealt with," Sharpton said.

Two uncles recalled how Brown had once predicted that someday the whole world would know his name.

"He did not know he was offering up a divine prophecy," Bernard Ewing said.

More than 4,500 mourners filled Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis for the service, which at times seemed like a cross between a gospel revival and a rock concert. It began with upbeat music punctuated by clapping. Some mourners danced in place.

The crowd included the parents of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old African-American fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida, along with a cousin of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old murdered by several white men while visiting Mississippi in 1955. Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

Also in attendance were several White House aides, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, moviemaker Spike Lee, entertainer Sean Combs and some children of Martin Luther King.

The Rev. Charles Ewing, the uncle who delivered the eulogy, said Brown "prophetically spoke his demise." And now his blood is "crying from the ground. Crying for vengeance. Crying for justice."

Poster-size photos of Brown, wearing headphones, were on each side of the casket, which had a St. Louis Cardinals ball cap atop it. Large projection screens showed a photo of him clutching his high school diploma while wearing a cap and gown. Two days after his death, he had been scheduled to start training to become a heating and air conditioning technician.

Sharpton also took the black community to task, saying it should be as upset about black-on-black crime as it is about police violence: "We have to be outraged by our disrespect for each other."

"Blackness," he added, "has never been about being a gangster or a thug."

Money and possessions prestige mean little, he said, "if we can't protect a child walking down the street in Ferguson and protect him and bring justice."

Brown's death fueled nearly two weeks of street protests in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. But his father, Michael Brown Sr., asked protesters to observe a "day of silence" Monday to let the family grieve.

The request appeared to be honored. At the Ferguson Police Department, where a small but steady group of protesters have stood vigil for two weeks, a handmade sign announced a "break for funeral." On Monday afternoon, the West Florissant Avenue commercial corridor was also devoid of protesters, whose ranks have typically swelled as days turned to nights.

After the service, Corey Thomas, a 34-year-old St. Louis man said the large crowd at the church reflected "that people are tired of being treated like dogs. They're tired of being taken advantage of."

The mourners came to show their support because "it could be any one of us," Thomas said.

Angela Pierre, a machine operator who once lived in Ferguson, said she hopes the funeral helps turn a page and eases tensions. Most important, though, she hopes it provides healing for Brown's family.

"I really wanted to just be here today to pray for the family and pray for peace," said Pierre, 48, who is black. "When all of this dies down, there's still a mother, father and a family who's lost someone. Sometimes a lot of the unrest takes away from that."

Brown was unarmed when he was shot Aug. 9 by officer Darren Wilson. A grand jury is considering evidence in the case, and a federal investigation is also underway.

Police have said a scuffle broke out after Wilson told Brown and a friend to move out of the street and onto a sidewalk. Police said Wilson was pushed into his squad car and physically assaulted. Some witnesses have reported seeing Brown's arms in the air in an act of surrender. An autopsy found Brown was shot at least six times.

Relatives denounced a video released by police, who say it shows Brown snatching cigars from a convenience store just before he was killed. In the video, the person said to be Brown is seen grabbing a clerk by the shirt and forcefully pushing him into a display rack.

Family and friends said Brown had a gentle, joking manner and dubbed himself "Big Mike." He was good at fixing things, liked computer games, the rappers Lil Wayne and Drake, the movie "Grown Ups 2," and the TV show "Family Guy."

Monday also marked the first day back at school for students in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Classes had been scheduled to begin Aug. 14 but were postponed because of safety concerns.

"We're ready to move forward," said Marcus Baker, a junior at McCluer South-Berkeley High School. "But we're still going to remember him."

This is exactly how they should respond. Vote. Vote them out.

Cowboy

Vote who out? Omama? Eric Holder? I agree!!!

WeThePeople1965

Omama will probably be impeached the next mistake he makes. I'm surprised he hasn't been impeached yet, however, he'll find a loophole to crawl out of. He's a lawyer.

coasterfan

Dream on. If we didn't impeach Bush for being asleep at the wheel before 9/11, lying to America about WMDs, and telling us that the Iraq war would pay for itself, we certainly aren't going to impeach Obama. Being disliked by the opposing party isn't cause for impeachment, and don't get me started about all the fake scandals the GOP invented.

B0ttom Line

Bring up Bush. Typical. And pathetic.

They are voting against those leaders that are insensitive or just don't care about the needs of the community they represent.

The Hero Zone's picture

Has there been local insensitivity? I'm just confused because it doesn't seem like there is anything specific against which to vote. What happened was hardly a partisan issue nor is there an outstanding law that allows the active, unprovoked murder of people. So turning this into a voter rally is odd.

Unless someone wants to run on supposition or a predetermined outcome? I don't get it.

Quote from Obama in "Dreams From My Father"

"With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share. That’s how things were, one long adventure, the bounty of a young boy’s life...
So it was to Lolo that I turned for guidance and instruction."

deertracker

That's where you guys are so wrong. You keep trying to make this about race when it is really about justice.

There is plenty of stupidity on both sides of this situation, I would say.

Overkill. Really. The comments weren't that bad to elicit this reaction. But unlike you, I don't believe that most white Americans are racist. What I do believe is that you are very sensitive to the subject and find boogeymans where none may exist. You say, "as if we whites can claim the moral ground." Now, I would say that would maybe qualify as racist. You have to insult an entire race to express your disgust at something. Why not just apologize for your own shortcomings. Huron_1969

No idea how you came up with that, but none the less, this is about race and the evolution of the civil rights movement. All the protesting, rioting and banter in the world will not change anything. The black community and their leaders need to take positive actions to address the high crime rate amongst blacks and many other social issues

In the last 20 years or so, the civil rights movement got off track and turned into a blame the whites for everything. As a result, blacks are taking steps backwards instead of forward. As time goes by, many indicators bear this out
Increasing high school drop outs
Increasing fatherless children
Increasing gang population
Increasing violent crime
Increasing unemployment
And more.....
At what point does the black community pick itself up and take more responsibility for their actions?

Coram Deo

"The Rev. Charles Ewing, the uncle who delivered the eulogy, said Brown "prophetically spoke his demise." And now his blood is "crying from the ground. Crying for vengeance. Crying for justice."

It's statements like that from the black religious community that enable the looters and the violence. Vengeance is never the prerogative of the offended from a Biblical standpoint. "Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord." Romans 12:19

"The most powerful antidote for the inevitable offenses we will all experience at some time is forgiveness: letting go of my desire to hurt someone for hurting me.

Contrary to what some people believe, forgiveness is not surrendering our desire for justice but our desire for vengeance. Forgiveness means allowing someone else to exact justice on our behalf.

The true victims in Ferguson—whoever they are—can know that even if a jury fails to render a fair verdict, God will ultimately settle the score. ~Dr. Robert Jeffress

Gee, now that school is back in session, how long will it be before we have some psychotic little white boy(s) feeling like they've been bullied their entire life and decide to kill a few of their classmates? A plot was just foiled last week.
"Prosecutors say the teens began making detailed arrangements to kill three staff members at South Pasadena High School and gun down as many students as possible."
Why weren't they gunned down like dogs in the street?

knowitall

Because they shouldn't have been. Had they confronted the police....then all bets are off. I think they are two different situations. It depends on the situation.....not the race. Let's see what the final findings are when all data is collected.

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

Sic 'em, meow. You make sure no white kids feel safe around you in the name of false equivalency! Hopefully the next time a white kid is shot and killed by police you can bathe in the blood and be comforted that your equality quota was met like some vengeful spirit needing sacrifice before it ends its haunt and sleeps once more. Ugh.

meowmix

You disappoint me HZ. Although, I do wonder just what would the outrage be if black police officers converged on a home that they "suspected" held a couple of little white boys intent on murdering a handful of their classmates, and in the process, shot them 6 times each, even though they were not armed.

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

Unless you know evidence in the relevant case here that the rest of us don't, there are still many things not known nor confirmed. However in your example, if the boys who were being raided were shot by police I would suspect it would be because of some kind of immediate threat evident. Armed or not. If the kids plotting murder were shot with justification I personally can't really be offended nor hold outrage.

The Big Dog's back

False equivalency?

DirkDiggler

Isn't your shift over KBI Union Slug ?

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

False equivalence is a logical fallacy where there appears to be a logical equivalence between two opposing arguments, but when in fact there is none. Journalists use a form of this logical fallacy when comparing two sides of a scientific debate in an attempt to provide a balance between a scientific and denialist point of view. However, there is no equivalence between the two sides, when one is supported by evidence, and the other side with little or no evidence, of which most is of low quality. In other words, in false equivalence, someone will state that the opposing arguments have a passing similarity in support, when, on close examination, there is large difference between the quality of evidence.

http://www.skepticalraptor.com/l...

The circumstances of meow's example are not nearly the circumstances of this case in Ferguson. Trying to treat them equally doesn't work because of how vastly different they are.

The Big Dog's back

deertracker

Having a bad day HZ? Your comment makes no sense to me. Sounds really morbid.

I think it is impossible for most whites to even imagine what life is like for some Black men. It is easy to judge when you are afforded white privilege. To think that all the stories by Blacks about the police are a lie is just dumb. The best revenge is success at the polls.

DirkDiggler

On the flipside it's impossible for most blacks to even imagine what it's like for some white men to have to work day in and day out to have 30% of their pay go to taxes to pay for their FREE government handouts ! Keep the uneducated masses as registered voters to secure their future FREE government handouts ! You just got served deercracker !

downthemiddle

You're right..

Instead of working, paying taxes and being responsible, day after day of layin' back and baby daddyin... For fun and profit.

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

Unless you are including me in your broad "most whites", or casting the prejudice of white privilege on me specifically (which is highly insulting), I can't do much to address your broad comments, deer, because they don't apply to me and how I live my life.

But what kind of success is at the polls? Again, there is no mention of law, candidate, nor issue brought up here. What is specifically being called out to vote on by this movement and words? I would hope it isn't "vote for the person who looks like you" because that is quite ruinous.

Lastly, my comment was morbid because meow seems to have wanted these kids gunned down in the streets in her cry for justice. It was sickening that instead of asking for better, she just wanted more of the same just "the white kids need theirs" kind of way when there was no comparing the two examples.

EDIT: As for my day? Thanks for asking. It's going well so far. It's just issues like these that rile me up, and meow's style of humor and/or posting only antagonizes things as she purposely tries to push buttons in an attempt to make a point.

JMOP's picture
JMOP

Be thankful even the lefties here hold you to a higher standard/regard than most other commentators on here.

It was somewhat out of character with that comment, but not outta line. Even people with high intellect, such as yourself, have a tolerance level (though higher than most) need to unleash it once in a while to get a point across.

Glad you had a good day as well! :)

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

One reaps what they sow for better or worse. If I am treated any better, then it is because to them - individually - I have earned such a distinction. I can only presume why, but for everyone it is different. My comment was made to meow specifically because of my observed and her self-declared posting style in the past. There are several posters here for whom I modify my style to better address them (as it would seem in turn is done for me).

I'm sure my response could be seen as shocking, but I'm not the one who has to live with such barbaric notions of "equality" even if it is just all in the fanciful mind of a fellow cat lover. There are some sentiments that she and I agree upon, and I've responded in kind to them. But in this case? No. But, counter to what sugar had levied against me before, I'm no milquetoast who will put his tail between his legs against such blunt statements - and its not even solely against "lefties" here either.

meowmix

Not to worry HZ, I slept perfectly well last night despite your "shocking" response.
No, I'm not in support of gunning down white kids who plan or even carry through, the act of killing fellow students. I was simply trying to make the point that a young black kid is killed for shoplifting a box of cigars and shoving a store keeper. However, in the case of the recent "foiled" plot in LA, search warrants were served instead of a SWAT team converging on their house. The South Pasadena Police Chief even said that the boys had a “very specific plan on how they were going to carry out their sick mission.”...really?

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

Your reason for Mr. Brown's death is quite presumptive and shallow. There are many differences between his circumstances and the others'. Comparing the two as equals isn't remotely rational especially when you so easily glaze over the actions on both sides.

C'mon HZ, you know what success at the polls mean. As for white privilege, why would that be insulting? It's true. All you need is a white face. Granted, it is not your fault what color your face is but the perks are still there. The fact that you or others don't realize this advantage speaks directly to the real entitled. Some on here want to make it seem that All Black people are lazy and need to be supported by their tax dollars is the most ridiculous thing I have read on here. Blacks can only work if they are given the opportunity. Even then there's still the issues of fair housing, lending and workplace discrimination. Please don't pretend those aren't real issues because they are. I know from personal experience and so do friends and relatives of mine.

Sometimes voting for the person that looks like you is wise because they have a better understanding of your personal struggles. I don't consider it ruinous at all. However, neither Herman Cain or Dr. Watson will ever get the Black vote.

I also did not think meowmix's comment was advocating killing white kids as a cry for justice. We really perceived them differently.

Then move if you think the persecution of "yo people" is so horrendous in this country !

Quote from deercracker: "Blacks can only work if they are given the opportunity".

That is the biggest line of bull$h!t I have ever heard ! Blacks have opportunities handed to them ! Especially financial aid for education ! However, they are the most uneducated group in the country ! Come get some it's FREEEEEEEEEE and I don't have to earn it !!! FACT !

You are welcome to point out in my life where my face has gotten me some kind of freebie. In fact would you like to follow me for a few weeks so you can point out all the privilege heaped upon my entitled and blind self?

Also if you think opportunity must always and only be given to you by someone else because you racially are incapable of it, there is nothing more we can discuss on this matter. As much as you and I abhor and don't agree with the lazy accusers, your statement is subtle support for them. Shall I tell the black kids who come to my store that they aren't allowed to make their own opportunity in life? Or are they supposed to be dependent on others their whole lives to do it for them?

Is that why in your opinion neither Mr. Cain nor Dr. Carson won't get the vote?

HZ, to suggest Blacks are sitting around wanting and waiting for the government to take care of them is Ludacris and an old stereotype. If you really think your white face alone has not helped you I challenge you to wear any Back man's face for a single day!

"Blacks can only work if they are given the opportunity."

Who gives opportunity? Where do I stand in line to receive it? Why can't opportunity be at least partially made internally? Why is Luda involved now? Just kidding on that last one, I know you meant ludicrous.

I don't believe I was the one suggesting that blacks (are we capitalizing it? Am I a White or a white - though I prefer to just be considered a person) are sitting around wanting and waiting. In fact I was quite taken aback at the notion you presented which is why I responded as I did also affirming it is a worn-out trope.

If you can propose a way for me to "go undercover" as a black man I will do it. I'd probably look more like a James Avery as a Michael Clark Duncan I am not. I'm serious. I go out of my way to try and consider things from many points of view. If I do it and get a DWB then so be it.

Or do you suggest something like creating a second account here, identifying myself as black, and seeing what happens? I'm willing to experiment with you, but you have to be open to me questioning the Illuminati-like conspiracy that because of my lack of pigmentation I somehow got a better rate on my house, car, or people just want to give me things like the one Chappelle Show skit. Do you want to look at my financial paperwork?

Your thoughts?

I interact with non-whites every day who aren't just friends but voluntarily come to my store for fun and/or business (which I presume is because they don't feel threatened by me as judgmental). I took a black studies course at college for an academic approach. I don't discriminate in my store nor personally.

I don't seek to use my own race to any active advantage and despite not being required to I list my race on any applications I put in that ask for it (to counter a common "white gripe" about NOT being hired because of race quotas, etc.). I don't lock my doors when non-whites are near me in my car, I hold doors for non-white men and women at the bank and other places, and I tip non-white service staff the same as white.

I don't know what you want from me personally or expect since I live my life respectfully of others regardless of their genetics. The concept of the black welfare queen or government cheese broodmare/babydaddy is just as insulting to me as it is to you.

I want everyone to succeed in life, not just whites.

True comments Deer even though some do not want to admit it.

"'Show up at the voting booths. Let your voices be heard, and let everyone know that we have had enough of all of this,' said Eric Davis, one of Brown's cousins."

This comment reflects much more common sense than all the high-blown rhetoric and terrible violence we have heard and seen over the past weeks. According to Wikipedia, the population of Ferguson is almost 70% black. Given that lopsided majority, making changes in how the city is run should be a piece of cake. In fact, one has to wonder why these changes had not been made earlier, if things were really as bad as we are being led to believe.

DirkDiggler

70% black with probably 10% registered to vote

Dr. King was a great man. His words are still relevant.

DirkDiggler

He was and his words were relevant in the 60's ! The very people he gave his life for have no clue what his words mean in todays day and age !

Only some, not all.

My God you are a complete fool ! Awwweee what's wrong union slug ? KBI gonna close the doors in the next couple years ? Whats your union gonna do for you then ? Hahaha ! Deercracker not taking care of the red rocket ?

The whitesheaters were Al Gore Sr, Robert the Grand Knight Byrd and Geroge Wallace all democrappers, but then again a union/political hack like you always change history......

arnmcrmn

The only thing this younger generation knows of Dr MLK is that they get a day off of school because of him and that he had a speech that started with "I had a dream". Thats it.

It is impossible to know completely unless one lived through those times.

knowitall

Actually, it is impossible to know for sure how anyone different than you feels unless you walk a mile in their moccasins, so to speak. That is why we need dialogue.....first to understand, and then to be understood.

I agree Black Americans should take action, stop black on black crime, 91% of black men are killed by other blacks, finish high school, they have the highest drop out rate of our society, promote two parent families, young men must take responsibility as fathers.

Bill Cosby espouses these kind of thoughts. These are things ALL peoples should aspire to.

Thoughts are not the same as actions, which speak louder than words.

A true example would be Dr. Benjamin Carson. He never paid hush money to a mistress, because he never had a mistress.

.....that we know of!

Rosa

Yes, I have to wonder why their is not adamant protest when one black person kills a child??!! In Chicago, black people are killing each other constantly, the gang problem is horrific. They should focus on that.
