UPDATE 9 a.m.: Reports from the Put-in-Bay police are that a boy missing since 2 a.m. Thursday has been found unharmed. Check back here for updates.

Update 8:30 a.m.: The Put-in-Bay police are chasing several leads in the disappearance of a 15-year-old boy who's been missing since about 2 a.m. Thursday.

One lead is that Carter Pugh left the island at 10 a.m. Thursday on the Jet Express to Sandusky, police said.

Erie County sheriff's deputies, Sandusky police and Cedar Point police searched for him on the mainland. The Cedar Point police were involved because it was believed Carter might have met  friends at the park on Thursday.

The lead went cold, according to the Put-in-Bay police.

Other leads are being reviewed, according to a PIB police Facebook post.

"The Put-in-Bay Police is reaching out to members of the community, especially Carter's friends to help locate Carter," the PIB police post stated.

Update, 10 p.m. Aug. 7, 2014:

Carter Pugh, a resident of South Bass Island, was last seen around 2 a.m. on Catawba Avenue near Cameo Pizza, police said.

"The family has viewed surveillance video from the hotel looking to see if he can be seen in it," an employee of the Put-in-Bay Resort told the Register.

The employee said a bloodhound was used to track the boy's scent and the canine led searchers up to Erie Street to the Beer Barrel housing area.

Family members think there's a chance he might have taken the Jet Express to Sandusky to go to Cedar Point but his cell phone has been off all day since he went missing. The boy's father is in Sandusky searching for his son, the hotel employee said.

Residents are using ATV and motocross cycles to search vineyards and fields on the island.

The teen was possibly wearing light-colored shorts, a T-shirt, dark-colored sweatshirt and was carrying a black book bag, police said.

He left his home on the island at about midnight, police said.

Put-in-Bay firefighters organized the search, which began at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Anybody try to ping his cell phone?

JMOP's picture

Can they do that if it's turned off?

Yes. The battery has to be removed to keep it from pinging, I believe.

Cell phone providers are unable to ping a cell phone unless it is actually turned on.

If that's the case, they should be able to track his last location before it was turned off. However, I do believe pings are possible in a powered down phone. But, if he were abducted, if his abductor were smart, they would ditch the phone.

PIB just can't catch a break this summer. Hopefully this boy will be found but being out in the middle of the night at his age leads to more questions on my end.

The boat lines should have cameras at both the island and on shore docks for when things happen like this so police can at least look at the videos to see if a person got on the boats or not. I am not sure if anything like this exists?

And I wonder

little rich kid unhappy. probably at some girl's house-one his parents disapprove of.

says unassumer...

Sounds like the kid had it all planned to sneak away and where were the parents? I hope this kid realizes that a lot of money is being spent looking for him. The island is getting a reputation.

Julie R., do you have a conspiracy theory spin to this story too?

Fresh ideas

Are you stalking me? If so, why? (chuckle-chuckle)

You got to be should pay back the money spent on this snot

There's his side, her side, then there's the truth!

The kid should be doing community service if he ran away and didn't tell anyone where he was at.

Bad parenting?

idk how much money was spent looking for him that you guys speak of on here. I do know we spend a lot of money on them "police" why they set around over there doing nothing :)

Where was he when peace memorial was vandalized?

Nobody knows what happened, but yet they spew the nasty comments. Nice.

We know he was missing and now he is not.....and he's a 15 year old. Say no more!
