50 years ago, 1964: Republicans began forming behind the victorious conservative banner of Sen. Barry Goldwater for a unified assault on President Johnson's Democrats. The Arizonan swept to the party's leadership when he he rolled over moderate and liberal forces for a rafter-shaking triumph on the first ballot.

25 years ago, 1989: A Plymouth family was jubilant over the miraculous survival of their son, Thomas L. Root, 36, Alexandria, Va., who drifted unconscious for hours aboard a small plane before crashing in to the Atlantic Ocean. After his rescue it was found he had been shot in the stomach.

10 years ago, 2004: Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster was closed indefinitely as the park investigated an accident that injured four riders. The riders were in the front four seats of the coaster when the launch cable frayed as they were being shot 420 feet into the air, causing metal shavings from the cable to hit them in the face and arms.
