Miss Vacationland program this weekend

Nearly $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded during the Miss Vacationland 2014 Scholarship Program at McCormick Jr. High School 325 Ohio Street in Huron this Saturday.

Executive Director is Jacquelyn Mayer, the very first Miss Vacationland in 1962, winning Miss Ohio in 1962 and Miss America in 1963

This is the 5th year for the Miss Vacationland Scholarship program and each of the previous winners will be attending and performing on the stage. They are Jacquelyn Huna-Nichols of Warren,  Allison Goodwin of Broadview Hts., Layne Schneider of Beaver Creek and April O’Brien of Columbus.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the Pageant scheduld to begin at 7:00 p.m.    Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under.  All tickets will be sold at the front desk of the Theatre, or by calling Ann at  419-433-4312. 

The winner will receive a $1500 scholarship, a Crown, the Official Sash from The Sash Store,  the official Miss Ohio Sash Company of Miss Ohio, Floral bouquet from Colonial Gardens of Huron and a night’s lodging in the African Queen Suite at Kalahari Resorts.  She will also receive a gift basket of hair care products from  The Natural Wave of Port Clinton and the right to represent the vacationland area at The Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant in Mansfield in June.  The state winner represents Ohio at the Miss America Pageant in September .

Sawmill Creek Lodge has provided the rooms  and all rooms for Judges and the new Miss Vacationland. They are also offering a special rate of $99.00  the week-end for friends and family, the third person will pay only $15.00 and the 4th $15.00 etc.  Please call  Sawmill direct to reserve rooms   419-433-3800.  This offer is not available on line.  Other Hotels in Huron are also offering special rates for the week-end:  Motel 6  419-433-7829  at $31.99 per night plus tax and the Comfort Inn 419-433-5359 at $59.99 per night plus tax.  

Escorts for the Evening Wear Competition will be The United States Marine Corps, Veterans Honor Guard from Huron, OH.

Judges for the evening come from Indiana, West Virginia, Michigan and the Sandusky area.

Production and Technical support is supplied by Terra College in Fremont, OH and members of the Huron Playhouse, and volunteers from Firelands College BGSU.

The contestants are as follows:

Dana Rose Brown who is from Vermilion, OH  and is a student  at The Lorain County Community College working on a  degree in Middle Childhood Education.  Her talent presentation will be a Baton routine to “Soak Up The Sun” her Platform is:  Giving Back to America’s Heroes, Our Veterans.

Kristen Amber Schreiber is from Medina, OH and is a student at Eastern Kentucky University majoring in Early Childhood Special Education.  She will be playing the Flute to “Flight of the Bumblebee” Kristen’s Platform is Playing to Learn: The Importance of Early Childhood Education.

Chelsi Raye Howman who is from Ashland, OH and is a student at Ashland University.  She is studying Digital Media Journalism and hopes to become a nationally recognized television anchor.  She will be playing the Banjo to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown”  Chelsi’s Platform is  Stop Bullying Now:  Take a Stand!  Lend a Hand!

Sarah Ann Jasinski is from Vermilion, OH and a student at Bowling Green State University.  Sarah is majoring in Biology – Pre Dentistry in hopes to open her own practice.  Her talent presentation will be a vocal to “Don’t Rain on my Parade”, and her Platform is:  Service Through Music:  Keeping Music Programs Alive in Schools. 

LeAnn Mae Penn is from Cortland, OH and is a student at Kent State University with career goals to become a Physician.   Her talent presentation will be a Lyrical dance to “When You Say Nothing At All”. And her Platform is Autism Awareness.

Paige Annelies  Wiers  is from Willard, OH and a student at Willard High School.  Her career ambition is to become a School Psychologist.  Paige will play the Piano “Liz On Top of the World” for her talent.  Her Platform is:  The Hunger Next Door.

Hannah-Jo Weisberg from Penn Hills, PA is a student at Baldwin Wallace University with a major in Music and a career ambition to perform on Broadway.  Hannah will present a vocal “The Apple Tree”.  Her Platform is:  Dating Beyond Control:  Interactive Education on Dating Violence

Gabrielle Mariah Camry Bailey is a student at The Ohio State University with a major in Dance with a career ambition of dancing professionally and owning her own dance studio.  She will perform a Contemporary Dance to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.  Gabby’s Platform is “You Can’t Stop the Beat:  “Striving for a Heart Healthy America”

Camille Monet Dyquiangco is a student at Case Western Reserve University with a major in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism and a minor in Chemistry.  Camille’s career ambition to become a Physician.  Camille will perform a Lyrical Dance to “What’s Love” as her talent and her Platform is “Body Image”

Brittany Paige Holland is a student at Ohio Northern University.  She is majoring in Public Relations, Communication Studies and hopes to obtain an internship in the field of Short Track Racing and pursue a career in Racing Public Relations.  Her talent will be singing “Popular” from Wicked and her Platform is “Feeding America”  

Alexis Alison Richter is a student at the University of Cincinnati with a major in Neurophochology and a career ambition to work with children who have brain diseases and disorders.  Her talent will be playing the Piano to Sonata #8 in c minor.  Alexis’ Platform is Standing Tall on Prevention:  Early Detection of Breast Cancer.

Renee Alexandria Murry is a student at Adrian College with a Career ambition to receive a Bachelors Degree in Communication and obtain a career in Sports Broadcasting with hopes of launching a film production company.  Her Platform is “Disability:  It’s a different Ability”

Kayelin Lyndel Tiggs is a student at Wright State University.  She is majoring in Psychology with a career ambition of working with children through their education in her community, and to open her own Psych Practice specializing in child Development”  She will perform a Vocal to “Arms of The Angel” her Platform is Youth and Community Development.

Ashleigh  Elizabeth Jarzenski is a student at Ashland College majoring in Strategic Communications with a career ambition of becoming an Executive Recruiter.  Ashleigh will be Twirling the Baton to “Ceiling Can’t Hold Us”.  Her Platform is Building Hope For A Better Future, Habitat for Humanity.

Meals for Judges, Contestants and Staff will be provided by:  Panera , Sawmill Creek Resorts,  Berardi Restaurant, Frosty Frog, Messenberg Catering, Terry Deso, Danny Boys, Pat Miller, Wayne Duez, The Lunch Box, Perkins Family Restaurant   and many local stores donating gift cards for supplies and snacks.

Gift Baskets for the Judges were donated by K & K Interiors.  Contestants Baskets were donated by Jacquelyn Mayer, Bennetts Printing of Huron , The Popcorn Man of Port Clinton, .

The After Glow Party will be held at the Huron Eagles for all who attend the Pageant.  A free- will basket will be provided.  Food will be provided by  J.H.Routh Packing Co., New Horizons Bakery  of Norwalk , Perkins Family Restaurant,The Lunch Box, Port Clinton’s Community Market and Wayne Duez.  there will be a Cash bar available.  Catering furnished by Pat Miller, and Wayne Duez.

Wouldn't you think that a "Miss Vacationland" contest would ask that the girls require them to be from the "Vacationland"? I mean where is Penn Hills, PA for crying out loud? I guess it's just that the judges are from "Vacationland" and that's all that counts

Nah, it's more like 70's hair. We wore our hair much more higher and poofy and spritzed in the 80's Styles come back around.
