Obama pitches economic agenda at Ohio steel plant

President says comeback of auto industry saved more than 1 million American jobs
Associated Press
Nov 14, 2013

Dogged by the botched enrollment launch of his health care law, President Barack Obama on Thursday touted increased automobile fuel efficiency for helping reduce reliance on foreign oil.

For the first time in nearly two decades, the U.S. produced more oil at home in October than it imported from abroad. Obama called the shift "a huge competitive advantage" for the United States.

The president spoke at a Cleveland plant that makes steel used for higher fuel-efficient cars. Obama says the comeback of the auto industry during his presidency helped the ArcelorMittal plant and saved more than 1 million American jobs.

"We've got to do more to get those engines of the economy churning even faster," Obama said. "But because we've been willing to do some hard things, not just kick the can down the road, factories are reopening their doors, businesses are hiring new workers."

The president was highlighting some of the positive notes in the still sluggish economic recovery, even as problems with the health care law were the focus Thursday in Washington.

Obama announced earlier in the day from the White House that insurance companies would have the option to keep offering consumers plans that would otherwise be canceled. The announcement was meant to meet an Obama promise, ultimately unmet for millions, which assured Americans that they would be able to keep their coverage if they liked it.

"We are not going to gut this law. We will fix what needs to be fixed, but we're going to make the Affordable Care Act work," Obama said.

In a bright spot for Obama, Ohio Gov. John Kasich is one of a few Republican governors to take advantage of the law's Medicaid expansion to reach more low-income Americans.

"The governor didn't do it because he just loves me so much," Obama said. "If every Republican governor did what Kasich did here rather than play politics about it, you'd have another 5.4 million Americans who could get access to health care next year regardless of what happens with the website."

Obama was attending a political fundraiser Thursday evening in Philadelphia.

""a study by Ted Gayer and Emily Parker,... a mildly LIBERAL THINK TANK, concludes: "The $2.85 billion in vouchers provided by the program had a small and short-lived impact on gross domestic product, essentially shifting roughly a few billion dollars forward from the subsequent two quarters following the program. "cash for clunkers" merely caused people to purchase vehicles "slightly earlier than otherwise would have occurred." "

sorry-double post..

So...you would rather go back to Bushenomics, i.e. another major recession?

I can understand it when Republicans deride Obama for things that haven't worked, but it makes absolutely no sense to criticize him for things that HAVE been successful like the auto bailout. You don't have to like his solution, but it did save a million jobs. And that beats the heck out of the 800,000 jobs we were losing each MONTH in late 2008 under W.

Or , at least it SHOULD, if you are able to see things objectively, but you obviously don't, since you don't apply the same tough rubric to Republican presidents.

When you're upset at Obama's alleged untruthfulness about being able to keep your previous health insurance (even when it's a crappy policy not worth keeping), but give Bush a free pass for far bigger lies to the American public about WMDs, using them to scare us into accepting 2 unfunded, unnecessary wars in which thousands of Americans died, then it's obvious that you have lost all objectivity....

Truth2u

LOL!! you telling ANYONE that they lost objectivity, I didn't know that this was a humor forum!

BENGHAZI answers one of you ridiculous posts where you think Obama is excused because of something 10 years ago, and we lost objectivity? LOL, what a loon

And you have the NERVE to talk about LYING? Obama lied to the entire nation on about EVERYTHING, including his forgotten layering of the Adobe birth certificate. Lied about his campaign promise that he will not rest until the budget is balanced and then spent more money than ALL PAST PRESIDENTS COMBINED! YES, OBAMAnomics, he and YOU earned the title.

"You can keep your doctor, your hospital, your insurance'. LIAR, LIAR LIAR, and what does his administration tell those who are dying now without insurance? "Some will live and some will die" and you say others lost their objectivity? Get real.

Obama is a 21st century slave task master, he is now 'allowing' free people to keep what they want for insurance, but in 14 months if not he's going to whip us with the IRS audits and punish us with excessive taxation.

And What does BUSH have to do with Obama's economics? Only a FOOL would go back 10 years and bring up a completely different president in a childish attempt to justify a complete present day FAILURE. There are MANY incidents where the libtards have gotten us into wars where thousands died, Hearst, another one of your "comrades' LIED along with the democratic party forced the hand of McKinley to go to war against Spain, "Remember the Maine!"
Then lets see, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, ALL democratic control in these wars.

I suggest you put aside your ideology and mature a little.
Your presupusitions not only extend into your politcal posts but also into making accusations of others, I was NOT a supporter of Bush and then claim that I lost objectivity, while in truth you seem to never had any!

OMG, Truth2U is a Birther. Complete loon, one of those odd folks who are so far to the Right that they aren't even on the game board anymore. Yes, please tell us why 4 dead in Benghazi (no fault of Obama's) is a bigger scandal than 3000+ dead on 9/11, after Bush ignored obvious warning signs and went back to vacationing on his ranch. Please tell us how Benghazi is a bigger scandal than lying to the American people about WMD, in order to get us into two unnecessary wars in which thousands of Americans died and tens of thousands were injured.

Your biggest problem is that you are completely unaware of basic facts. It should trouble you that Fox is giving a completely different set of economic news than any other news source, especially given their poor track record for bias... Spending rose an average of 8% per year under Bush. It rose an average of 1.8% per year during Obama's first term, and is even lower now, due to the sequester and other cuts. You do understand that 1.8 is a smaller number than 8, correct?

shucks

People like Truth2U is another small minded person who lets Rush and Fox news stir him up.

Truth2u

Again, trying to deflect the questions, valid facts have been presented and you and all your anti American socialists refuse to actually answer the questions and instead attack those who have valid questions.

You disgust me, your one of the most anti Americans this forum has ever had. Why don't you just move to China/Russia instead of destroying our nation?

Again, Obama is the 21st century slave master.

And guess what I didn't read your last complete post because you have NO foundations for claims on anything. You justify the present based upon things others did 10 years ago or further. Face reality coaster fan, you do NOT represent Freedom but slavery to the task masters, in other words, your a Comrade and will always find a way to justify instead of facing facts.

YAWWNN

Using coasternut logic, 3000+ dead on 9/11 would be a Clinton scandal. After all, did you forget that Bin Laden was offered up to Clinton on a silver platter but he declined to grab up Bin Laden and opted to bomb an aspirin factory? Whose mind is devoid of basic facts? It would seem that yours is. Funny you use stats from fox news. The stats given by CNN also refute the numbers you just pulled out of your tush.

America was running great under Bush for 6 of his 8 years. You can thank good old CLINTON for his "everyone must own a house" sweetheart deals with the banks and loan applicants that caused the housing crisis and put this nation in a downward spiral.

Darwin's choice

Again you lying, BS'ing troll, your criminal in chief is the topic, not crap you spew about Bush that are blatant lies! Obama should just step down, instead of dragging your precious democratic party down the drain, if thats even possible to stop now.
You getting a little "squirmey" there, teacher?

Obama if a failure.

coasterfan

Being hated by the opposing party isn't a reason to step down. If it were, Bush should have also done so.

Ooh, I sense some anger. Well, you are a Republican, so that's not a surprise. I guess my question to all of you is: where was your anger when things went to hell in a hand basket during Bush's 2nd term?

Democratic Party going down the tubes? That's a good one. The reality, of course, is that it's the Republican Party that is shrinking by about 1% per year. Given the fact that your party is anti- minority, anti-LGBT, anti-every religion except Christianity, anti-woman, anti-poor people, you really don't have a path to victory in a national election. But your biggest problem is that your party also alienates young people because of the above. Young people aren't haters, and your stance against the above groups certainly doesn't attract new people to your cause, does it?

YAWWNN

Obama has a 35% approval rating, I would say his universally disliked except by a few far left wackos who just can't seem to remove the barb from the deepest depths of their anus. Love how you seem to think everyone who dislikes Obama must be a republican. While the republican party is dwindling, it would behoove you to know that the research shows they are not switching to the Democrat party but to independents and center-right 3rd parties. At the current rate, both repubs and dems will become dinosaurs in the next 10 yrs.

shucks

Amusing yet pathetic.

And you're psychotic.

Luckily they only represent about 35% of the people at this point. They are now a minority.

Coasterfan...

Obama quote of the day:

“What we are also discovering is insurance is complicated to buy.”

Hilarious, if it wasn't so revealing the depths of stupidity he has.

More than likely... neither Obama or any of the asshats that wrote that failure of a wealth-redistribution scheme - have EVER purchased health insurance themselves to even have the slightest clue about it. Most have never even had a job. Of course it's complicated to them!

coasterfan

And the funny thing is, Obamacare is STILL better than anything the Republicans proposed, since they didn't propose anything. Even now, they don't have an alternative plan to Obamacare.
The rollout was a huge screwup, and we Dems aren't happy with the way Obama handled the aftermath, either.

But a late, flawed introduction of the plan doesn't mean we should scrap Obamacare, any more than a late flight means we should abolish/outlaw airports and planes. Clearly, the intelligent, adult response is to find a solution, and make it work. Going back to the previous non-system, in which we all paid for the Health care of 40 million uninsured Americans, through higher premiums would be stupid. It was a FAR more expensive way to tackle the problem. Something had to be done. GOP had their chance and did nothing, during the Bush years.

But, we know this is just a temporary speedbump. The issues are already being resolved, and Obama, to his credit, was humble enough to give an apology, and also agreed today to some changes/improvements in the law. From where I'm sitting, that is a more admirable response that anything his predecessor gave. We're still waiting for an apology - anything - from Bush. A least he had the good sense to go quietly to his room after he left office, to ponder the utter ruin he had made of the country he loves.

I'm reminded of a quote by Garrison Keillor about Bush: "Dead wrong on everything. And proud of it".
