Steel rode into Sandusky on his bicycle, braving a 13-mile ride from his family’s home at White’s Landing near Vickery, said Christian Ewers, Steel’s friend.
He was headed to Ewers’ home on Shoreway Drive.
Ewers said he went to the Cleveland Road area at about 5:30 p.m. to meet up with Steel, when he saw the crash.
Sandusky police had few details to provide on the incident.
Ewers said Steel was on a bicycle, stopped at the corner of Remington Avenue and Cleveland Road. The traffic light turned green for Cleveland Road motorists when Steel began to cross the street. He rode into a westbound Mitsubishi, slamming into its driver’s side. It was raining slightly at the time of the crash.
“The dent was pretty big,” Ewers said. “He must have hit it hard.”
Steel fell to the ground on impact and began twitching, witnesses said. Everyone suspected the teen was experiencing a seizure, Ewers said.
Steel was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Firelands hospital, although medical staff there said Steel was released later in the evening.
The Mitsubishi’s driver stopped after the crash and waited for police to arrive. As of Monday evening, no one had been cited, Sandusky police Lt. Robert VanScoy said.
