Couple dies in Ohio 162 crash

Pickups collide; passengers killed, drivers suffer serious injuries
Sandusky Register Staff
Feb 2, 2013

A North Fairfield couple died and two other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash that shut down Ohio 162 west of New London Saturday afternoon.
Rodney Williams, 69, and Betty Williams, 66, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:18 p.m. crash near Town Line Road, according to a news release from the Mansfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Rodney Williams was a front seat passenger and Betty Williams was a backseat passenger in a pickup driven by Karlie Conaway, 15, of Greenwich, when she lost control and went left of center into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Conaway’s westbound 2000 Dodge Dakota collided with a second pickup, a 1998 Ford Ranger driven by Troy Green, 40, of New London, who was driving east.
All four occupants were trapped when the New London Fire Department arrived to extricate them from the pickups.
Conaway and Green both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk for treatment.
Rodney Williams, Conaway and Green were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Betty Williams was not.
No charges have been filed.
There was no indication of any alcohol or drug use that could have contributed to the cause of the crash.
Conaway is a student at South Central High School.

Such a sad accident :(

my sincerest sympathies to all family members and friends

Probably not a good idea to have a 15 yr old inexperienced driver with a permit driving during a snowstorm.

@Mommy2jonny. You have my sincerest sympathy for your losses. I cannot even begin to imagine how awful it must be for our 15-16 year old going through this. She must be just devastated right now. Please express my deepest sympathy to her also. Of course it isn't her fault. That is why they call these things ACCIDENTS. I am sure she did not intend for this to happen. I hope that at some point in time she gets some professional help in dealing with all of this. I am sure she will need it. God bless her and the rest of your family in their hour of need.

@mommy - Maybe you should be caring more about your family, instead of worrying about what people are posting on news sites.

This is a horrible tragedy for all involved.

Why do friends or family of accident victims, on the very next day, subject themselves to reading the comments on a newspaper article, where opinions hold sway and speculation runs rampant?

Rod Farva

Because they are drama queens that want to stir the pot

i looked on here to find out what happened but i refuse to read this crap and not say anything just dont want them bashing her she has a tough road ahead of her as it is

KnuckleDragger

Then expect to be hammered by people who disagree with you. It's not harassment, it is your choice to continually make comments.

RemorselessEverMore

That's what I'm talking about!

ColdAsIce

you deserved that one!

KnuckleDragger

Also how about having a little respect for those of us who have to pull these people out of the wreckage and face their families when the whole situation could have been avoided.

RemorselessEverMore

so your a firefighter. nice to know your protecting us.

KnuckleDragger

Actually no I am not, but keep guessing if you'd like. Besides, the fact that I disagree with someone has no bearing on the type of care I give someone. All would be given my full effort. Why people think that people who provide care to injured persons can't have a differing opinion without providing bad care to someone is beyond me. I can assure you that everyone I care for is given my all regardless of who they are. Having said that, I still disagree with letting a 15 yr old drive in a snowstorm and that will not change. I have seen a lifetime of tragedy due to poor decision making. If my comments make one person think before doing something like this, and saves a life, then so be it if I ruffle a few feathers. Get over it! If you don't like what I have to say, don't read it.

luvblues2

Like.

RemorselessEverMore

It's heartbreaking but it's true. 15 or 16 doesn't matter. Obviously conditions were too dangerous for such an inexperienced driver.

LOL. Go ahead, give it a try. You might want to contact an attorney though. Harassment charges can't be filed on someone posting in a public forum, since you have a choice whether you read the comments or not. Stating an opinion is NOT harassment, and no judge is going to buy it. Thanks for playing though. You had me shaking in my shoes, I was so scared...not!!!

@Mommy2jonny09 - I'm sorry about your loss. Please remember my family - the one currently fighting for his life in Toledo due to injuries from this tragic accident. I for one only wish at this moment that a underexperienced driver was not on the road during a snow storm - do I blame her - NO - will I always remember she only had her permit - YES. I can only hope we will be living with a future of healing and not also planning a funeral because of this accident. Sorry for your loss, but your family is not the only family suffering due to this accident, but I so wish Troy had not crossed paths with Karlie no matter what her age or experience.

Mommy2jonny09

I too am sorry troy is hurt...i feel for you its not fair for ppl to act like rod & betty deserved to die because they let karlie drive that day...i sincerely hope troy heals 100% and ppl need to stop bashing and acting like she did it on purpose i looked on here to find out what happened but i refuse to read this crap and not saying i truly hope your family doesnt suffer a casualty, i never meant to offend you, i just dont want them bashing her she has a tough road ahead of her as it is i wish shed never crossed paths with him cause i loved my cousins however i refuse to blame her for the pain shes my cousin too but im alot older than her the last time i saw her she was little...may god keep over troy and your family i will keep him in my prayers

KnuckleDragger

Nobody feel they deserved to die. I for one, was just pointing out a lapse in judgement in order to get people to think before doing something like this. Of course they didn't deserve to die, we are all human and make mistakes. However, if one person learns from this, and it saves them, then Rod and Betty didn't die in vain. Understand?

steelersfan71

WOW some people just suck! I know this family and they are great people. So those of you who feel the need to judge, you can all go **** your self's. This family has so much to deal with! Just know that all of us who matter, LOVE YOU ALL, and will do anything we can to ease your pain.

reporter54

When a tragedy occurs, the worst thing you can do is get on here and read comments. People are entitled to say what they want but you may not like it. Attend to other things instead of reading comments. If one of my relatives were to be involved in an accident, I doubt I would jump on here to see what others had to say. I would be too busy comforting my family members anyway.

Mommy2jonny09

Bunch of melodramatic cr*p in here this morning. Seriously though, I will send thoughts and prayers to all involved...

deertracker

My deepest sympathy and condolencences to all involved. I am not the judge of who should have or should not have been driving. Fact remains, it was still a very unfortunate accident. The younglady was simply trying to learn something that all drivers in this area really need to know regardless of age. However, anyone who has to "pull these people from the wreckage" do so voluntarily and get paid for it. Get another job if you will but it in no way gives anyone with an ounce of decency the right to be judgemental so publicly. The same thing could've happened on a sunny day. It is also a fact that anyone has the right to voice their opinion and chances are you won't like all of them. Keep your head up and move on best you can. Ignore the noise!

KnuckleDragger

ColdAsIce

I have no words for this terrible accident!

grandmasgirl

There have always been accidents. And people have always commented on them. I know someone who has been in a wheelchair for decades because someone chose to drink and drive. These older people probably thought that this child needed experience and they made a bad decision by letting her drive. Nothing will bring these people back. Not all the prayers in the world. We need to pray for those living and recuperating.

RemorselessEverMore

excellent words G.G.

eightballcuet1

I don't see anything in the story that indicates that road conditions were a contributing factor in this horrible accident. When I was out driving at this time on Saturday, the roads were wet but clear. My most sincere sympathies to the families and prayers for the recovery of the injured.

KnuckleDragger

The accident happened during the snow storm yesterday. It was snowing pretty heavily and the roads were snow covered and slick. I won't tell you how I know, but suffice it to say, I work out on the roads in rural huron county.

starryeyes83

I wonder if this is the same lady I worked with in Norwalk years ago, If so sad, she was really nice.
I agree about not letting a 15/ 16 year old drive in those conditions. They 're not careful enough. No excuse at all. and the driving age should be raised.

DebNgary79

I am very sorry for your loss and the pain that your daughter is going through at this time but OTHER people do have to realize that it is the only way young ones and some old ones are going to learn how to drive in the bad weather is to drive in it. You can not learn these things sitting behind a schoolbook or watching it on a screen. Again I am very sorry for both sides involved....

KnuckleDragger

Winter storm driving is an advanced skill that is usually learned after Basic driver training, NOT while on a permit.

ColdAsIce

Well aren't you just a know it all. Bet you have no children and it's probably a good thing you do not.

starryeyes83

It's better to teach beginners winter driving in a smaller car out in a parking lot first. So they can get the feel of it That's the way I was taught ... Not behind a big engine they can't control, it's too much horsepower at first.

Sad lesson all the way around.

@KnuckleDragger....Did you see where you can NOT comment on this blog in the Norwalk Reflector.. Someone must have gotten mad and called them and had it stopped....hmmmmmmmmmmmm

KnuckleDragger

Yeah, which is why I called them yesterday and canceled my subscription to both the Reflector and the Register. On the flip side, the morning journal just got my business. It is comical that they will remove my posts, which contained no threats, because some disagree with my assessment about letting a teen drive in bad weather. But some punk kid (Handyman27) posts several threats against me on here and nearly all of them are still up, despite being reported as offensive. Goes to show ya, the mods on here latch on to people who they disagree with amd make their experience less than desireable. Oh well, time to change the username again.
