U.S. EPA head breaks promise to visit Clyde

U.S. EPA administrator Lisa Jackson has made it official: She’s not coming to Clyde to visit the families affected by the Clyde Cancer Cluster, breaking a promise she made in 2011.

In addition, EPA officials have asked the families to quit sending questions to the EPA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and send them instead to a regional office in Chicago.

Jackson wrote a letter in October 2011 to Warren and Wendy Brown — parents of Alexa Brown, 11, who died of cancer — saying she would visit Clyde to meet with the cancer cluster families after the EPA concluded its investigation in the matter.

In an October 2011 press release, Jackson said she would come to Clyde “next year.”

As 2012 came and went, Jackson never showed up.

She announced recently she’s stepping down as the EPA’s administrator early this year. A replacement hasn’t been named.

Pete

Another liar in the Obie Administration? I for one am shocked!

John Harville

asshats! She promised to come "when the EPA completed its investigation". In case you missed it, the EPA is still here at the request of the Parents and their attorneys. The EPA said it will return in the spring to do more at Whirlpool Park.
And within the last two weeks the Parents' attorneys requested further EPA tests in the city sludge pits.
Plus the EPA just stated no further action is needed at the former Clyde Dump or Formulated Paint Products.
The woman did NOT break a promise - she just won't be in the position because the attorneys are trying to find some way to make money out of this,

Pete

She lied. Flat out. Said she would come in 2012 and did not.
Go ahead and try to cover for your Messiah's joke of an administration. The people of this country know better.

John Harville

Really Pete? Try to look past your distrust of the Black man in the Whitehouse and look at the law.
Families called in /hired a high-profile law firm as their Erin Brockovitch. The law firm - and Bowlus in Fremont representing Abdoo Construction companies - called in the EPA just after a 'final report' had been issued. Now, anything said by anyone can be used in trials.
Quite honestly, families who can't cope with the fact their grandchildren died of an horrible cancer, knowingly or unknowingly, 'disinvited' the EPA director when they invited the attorneys. Investigate the lawfirm before you spew again. Look past your political dislike and try a new exercse - looking at the facts, francis.

Pete

So the Race Card has been played. Always the last trick in a losing argument.

So she couldn't visit because of lawyers. P!$$ poor excuse. When has a lawyer ever stopped a politician from a PR visit?

goofus

Exactly Pete, I thought all politicians are lawyers!!!

John Harville

Nope. NO race card. Truth.
Not an excuse.
She doesn't want to make it political nor deny the parents/others their opportunity to gain closure.
She's not a politician. She is not an elected official.,
But she DOES understand that if she appears now, she worsens the situation.

MiddleRight

She is not black John, just a liar.

John Harville

Middle... read before you comment. He said "your Messiah...", a direct reference to the President - who IS Black.

Pterocarya frax...

Actually she is African American.

goofus

asshats, moderators trying to see if I can trigger the obscenity filter like the above's post first word. The second post by John Harville

nosey rosey

Good for her. This whole witch hunt needs to end.

mikel

Agreed.

grandmasgirl

It doesn't matter why she isn't coming. The thing is, she promised she would. This is a trust broken. She should have just said "I will try". I really don't believe that they will ever find out why there is so much cancer in this area. It is not just children, but people of all ages.

John Harville

She would lhave come last year - but then some of the parents called in attorneys which meant she couldn't come since it now may end up in the courts.
Many of us are cancer victims in Clyde - we just aren't children. The children had a cancer common in 40-year-old men. Several 40-something men also have died in Clyde in the last 15 years. There also has been an unusually high incident of breast and lymphoma cancers.

goofus

She's really been busy covering her tracks on the E-mail fraud and everything.

John Harville

Goofass, check the legalities. And beware - YOU could be called to testify since you speak so openly about the cluster.

goofus

I speak about cluster? It's called reading comprehension, I'm against the EPA and the administration. Why does the whole south shore of lake erie have so much kidney disease prevalent?

John Harville

Ah. You just brought up another issue that could bring you into court. Congrats. You're against Richard Nixon's EPA? Are you against the ENTIRE Administration on 'principal'? Or do you pick and choose? Or would you be against the Administration no matter what?

grandmasgirl

I understand that Clyde has many cancer cases, but the whole area has more than their share. If we did a study on percentages, it probably would be about the same in the four county area. Maybe not as many child cases, but overall.

cam

People in Clyde need to look into the waterlines they had for years.

John Harville

And the dump that operated 30 years before EPA regulation that eventually was an EPA Superfund site. It closed right after the Independence Day flood that closed the water plant, pushed picnic tables two blocks, overflowed the dump and spread the water from three creeks across much of the city depositing who knows what chemicals.

DGMutley

I wouldn't label her a liar but she sure hasn't handled situation very well. I'm afraid Clyde would be on the bottom of my list of places to live because of this unknown cancer cause.

John Harville

In case youo missed it earlier, as soon as the Parents brought in attorneys it became a civil suit - a legal matter - with no indiction who would be liable. She can't come. The Utah law firm prides itself on getting money for victims - and not really caring about causes or children.

DGMutley

First of all there isn't anyone better or more qualified to run the EPA than Ms. Jackson. It appears that some may disagree but they're entitled to their opinions. They need to check her bio.

It's probably the way the article is presented but it seems she is coming off cold and calloused.

Armymom7

The election is over, who in Washington cares about the Midwest until Hillary declares?

John Harville

The parents brought in attorneys... now the Administration can't be apresence here.

Maggdi

The bill for her visit would be better spent doing tests. The families effected deserve at least that if these expenses are going to be incurred for investigations.

John Harville

She said she'd come when the investigation is complete...the EPA is returning in the Spring.... capiche?
