A Sandusky man is dead after a fire that destroyed his house trailer early New Year's Day on Sprucewood Drive on the city's east side.

John O'Reilly, 66, was found inside the front door, near the bedroom of the trailer at 10 E. Sprucewood, Sandusky firefighters said.

Erie County Coroner Dr. Brian Baxter is arranging tests to determine the exact cause of death, Ricci said.

Firefighters got the call at about 2:21 a.m. today. With two ambulances out on other calls, firefighters responded short-handed with a crew of seven. Perkins firefighters were called for mutual aid, but the call was cancelled as they were en route, Sandusky firefighters said.

Firefighters have so far determined the fire began in the living room of the trailer.

Ricci said firefighters learned from the trailer park management O'Reilly  lived alone in the trailer and had lived there for several years. A spokesperson for Ohio Veterans Home said O'Reilly had lived at OVH until his discharge more than four years ago.

We will have more information on this story on this site and in Saturday's Register.

The guy was John Riley and had been a resident at the OVH. Nice guy. Too bad.

Does anyone else think we need to change the laws concerning Coroners?

Think about it, what does Baxter make a year for 'arranging tests to determine the exact cause of death'?

In the older days, the coroner was a pathologist who ACTUALLY performed the tests and determined the cause. It seems today its an over paid job that the sherrif or police could 'arrange'. I mean, how tough is it to arrange the body to be always sent to Toledo and have a pathologist perform the tests!

And we pay Baxter how much a year to arrange these tests that others do?

It was John Riley?? Oh no! That really upsets me. You are right COLUMBUS AVENUE...he was a nice guy. I always worried about him being on his own. So sad :(

Bailey, Get a life.

If you want to change something, then get off your duff and do it instead of whining here for someone else to do it for you.

John O'Reilly?

You were right COLUMBUS was John. Very upsetting. Condolences to his family.
