Obama says 'America's possibilities are limitless'

Asserting "America's possibilities are limitless," President Barack Obama declared on Monday that a decade of war is ending and the nation's economy is recovering as he launched into a second term before a flag-waving crowd of hundreds of thousands on the National Mall.
Associated Press
Jan 21, 2013

"My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it, so long as we seize it together," Obama said, moments after taking the oath of office on a crisp day in the nation's capital.

The president didn't dwell on any first-term accomplishments but looked to hard work ahead in a country still grappling with a sluggish economy.

"We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit," he said. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future."

Hundreds of thousands of people fanned out across the Mall, and millions more watched on television, as Obama took the oath of office to begin his second term.

Sandwiched between the bruising presidential campaign and looming fiscal fights, Monday's inaugural celebrations marked a brief respite from the partisan gridlock that has consumed the past two years.

Standing in front of the flag-bedecked Capitol, he implored Washington to find common ground over his next four years. And seeking to build on the public support that catapulted him to the White House twice, the president said the public has "the obligation to shape the debates of our time."

"Not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals," Obama said.

Looking ahead to his second-term agenda, the president said the nation must "respond to the threat of climate change" and tackle the comprehensive immigration reform that has eluded Washington for years.

"Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity," he said.

Moments earlier, Obama placed his hand on two Bibles — one used by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the other used by Abraham Lincoln — and recited the brief oath of office. Michelle Obama held the Bibles, one on top of the other, as daughters Malia and Sasha looked on.

Vice President Joe Biden was also sworn in for his second term as the nation's second in command.

Monday's oats were purely ceremonial. The Constitution stipulates that presidents begin their new term at noon on Jan. 20, and in keeping with that requirement, Obama was sworn in Sunday in a small ceremony at the White House.

Pick up a copy of Tuesday's Register for dispatches from the inauguration in Washington D.C. from Register reporter Andy Ouriel and photographer Jason Werling.

Hate is a terrible word, but I can say I detest everything he has done and desires to do.

Well, of course YOU would, since Obama stands for everything that many conservatives despise... equal rights for ALL Americans. You know, a more inclusive society, in which every American, no matter how rich or poor, white or black, straight or LGBT, Christian or otherwise are all considered equal and treated equally.

It's kind of funny to the more right-wing conservatives rail against Obama for supposedly being divisive. The reality of course, is that it is THEY who truly strive to push us towards a more divided country, since they wish to exclude equal rights to everyone who isn't exactly like themselves: stodgy, old, grumpy and white.

Personally, I thought the ceremony was uplifting and his message was classic Obama: we're all on the same team.

rickross2

Thats the stupidest comment ever typed out in english. He has our economy booming for sure(lmfao). And my taxes didnt go up a little bit....(they doubled). And our national debt is on the decline(roflmao). What has he done for the better of the country as a WHOLE? He made poor people feel better about being poor. He made rich people feel worse about being rich, and made the middle class his playground. In my 14 yrs of being an adult, I paid double this year over any other given year. So I dont want to hear about how great he is, he is ruining the morals this country was built on. So I stand by statement and skoff at yours. If this is hope and change than no thanks.

John Harville

rickross2... 'my 14 yrs of being an adult' is chronologically speaking, yes? So, you're 32, served at least four years in the military and at least one tour in a war zone; OR you have a four-year degree and are gainfully employed in your chosen field with no federally-susidized student loans; OR a bit of both, maybe using the GI Bill which this president extended to the current military?
And wow, you've filed your income taxes already without W-2s or 1099s or other forms - and you already know how you paid double while earning the SAME income as previous years in your 'adulthood'.
In what universe did your taxes double? Blah Blah Blah.
Those "morals this country was built on" that he's ruining? "All men are created equal...inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness..."
Man, you gotta put up or shut up.
...and stop hating the man living in the house built by black men.
Because... we won!!!

rickross2

I never served, never went to college. I have my w-2(from BOTH jobs) and I did my taxes on Turbo Tax last night. I dont hate much honestly. And if you give me your cell number, I would be more than happy to call you and set up a appointment to look at my finances. I wouldnt be so upset if I hadnt just done them last night, but damn it I'm sick of not getting any help. Not rich enough to not worry about it, not poor enough for any help. Glad you know so much about what I have and dont have.

Ross... still gotta know how your 2012 taxes doubled because of the president since Congress just passed the law changing the tax code in December 2012 and it won't take effect until 2013??
For what 'help' have you applied but not gotten? You speak with such authority about people who don't want to work and are the 'takers' of whom Paul Ryan speaks. You talk as if you have a wealth of experience in life - education, family, maintaining a home and/or a mortgage. I just imagined this 'adult' who has learned that each person serves some purpose and that there isn't some grand conspiracy against you.

Dr. Information

What part of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness means handing out billions of dollars to people that don't want to work? Or forcing people to carry insurance, while forcing companies to cover contraceptives when it goes against their beliefs and religion. Life , liberty and pursuit of happiness.......we all have life here, we all have liberty, but its up to each person to build their own happiness, not off the backs of the tax payers.

The comment " we won" just really shows the hypocrisy of dem voters. They really are that arrogant. It's them against everyone else. They won. Did you all read that, they won! I hope that sinks in with these readers.

deertracker

You must mean all that money the bankers and Wall St. bums got.You can build lots of "happiness" with that!

John Harville

Doctor Doctor... "promote the general welfare" defined by Libertarians as that situation which arises, unfortunately, when the federal government has to provide what the private sector should but won't. It does NOT mean 'welfare' as in food stamps, etc. about which all of you speak so hatefully. It means providing 'generally' for the ENTIRE country to ensure 'pursuit of happiness'.
And yes, WE WON! Despite gerrymandering, Citizens United, billions spent by Karl Rove and the Kochs, WE THE PEOPLE won. WE put our fellow citizens where they belong - at the forefront of our concerns and cares. Try it.

deertracker

Yet you call yourself rickross! That is comical.

"We, the people, still believe that enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war."

A bold-faced lie.

"Interesting" that he used the term: "perpetual war."

This country has been at war since even before 1941.

Why is Mr. Obama sending military advisors to 35 African counties?

Why is the U.S. building a military base in Australia?

Why did the U.S. arm Poland with Patriot missiles and send a detachment?

Why did the U.S. attack Libya?

If our "possibilities are limitless," why does our Dear Leader keep trying to limit the possbilities? And when somebody succeeds in spite of the roadblocks in their way, why does our Dear Leader insist they be punished for their success?

All that he's doing is overseeing and, in fact, acting as an instrument towards, the destruction of everything that made this country great. He'll go down in history, all right, but I suspect our future won't look back on this part of its past all that kindly!

The Big Dog's back

Hey, that sounds like a good idea. Let's take it all and everybody starts over on equal ground. No pass me downs, everybody has to work. No sippin Martinis at poolside waiting for that dividend check to come in. Yeah, I'd like that.

Wouldn't take long and you'd have different social classes again. You can't teach motivation and the drive to become successful. Your jealousy of those that have made it is stinking this place up.

Maggdi

Unfortunately I can't tell if you're kidding.... I can't imagine that any decent person would condone legalized theft.
Btw the confiscation would be for bureaucrats to redistribute and I can guarantee you that your take won't be anywhere near what you expect after it's run through their sticky fingers.

arnmcrmn

The idea that peoples hard work should be stripped and given to everyone else to "start fresh" is Communism/Socialism at its best. Thankfully people like Big Dog don't run a business, because it would last about a week.

coasterfan

I must disagree. The biggest anti-constitutional move during our lifetime was Bush's Patriot Act, which allowed warrantless searches by the Feds, followed closely by use of torture at Gitmo. Both moves by Bush reversed 200+ years of American history. The first greatly increased the distrust Americans have in their government and the 2nd damaged America's reputation around the world. Bush destroyed, Obama rebuilt.

Fromthe419

The Patriot Act was extended by Obama, thought he was gonna close Gitmo also? I am no big fan of Bush, but Obama just extended the policies started by Bush. The two party system we have now is broken, both make promises they know they will never keep and the endless borrowing continues. We need a real leader that will tell the American people the truth, but such a real leader would not get elected yet alone nominated.

Contango

@ coasterfan:

"Anti-constitutional"?

The term is: unconstitutional.

Better check both the NDAA and the Patriot Act, both of which were renewed by Mr. Obama.

And "what" did you retire from teaching?

dontcare

Do you define failure by having the rich pay an equal percentage of tax as the rest of us?

Maggdi

For someone who cleverly gave them self a name that indicates you have no interests, you sure do ask a lot of questions. But since you asked I can tell you I consider it a failure to give anymore money to a bureaucracy that is incapable, by its very nature, of using the treasures of this country for the never ending and doomed pursuit of Fairness. Our founding principles were established by the understanding of human nature. And giving someone the power to decide who wins and who loses never will come near the fairness you seem to seek because that damn human nature steps in every time. It becomes a question of who you know as to how far you go. Greece is a perfect example, I know that story first hand. And by the way, the word Utopia in Greek actually means Nowhere.

dontcare

I'm sorry could you repeat your statement, this time so it makes sense, thanks

John Harville

Sama Tryin' to sound Libertarian there? Hamilton and Jefferson argued this - the Federalist and the Democratic-Republican. Both realized the federal government must step in when the Private Sector (which the Libertarians dearly worship) refuses to do. Libertarians believe YOU, Samantha, should step up and contribute...

grandmasgirl

Now I am going to say something that will really fire off those comments. I can honestly say that I think this president was elected, not because of his qualifications, but because of the color of his skin. Some blacks voted for him because he was black, and some whites voted for him because they didn't want people to think they were racist. I never liked what he stood for and still don't. If you think you are better off than you were before he was elected, you are either lucky (because you found one of the few good paying jobs) or you are on an entitlement program. Bring them on!

Amazing so-called knowledgeable people never heard of the great white guilt felt by some losers that helped Obozo win the election again.

coasterfan

America is better off than it was in 2008. End of discussion. There are likely more people who voted for Romney because he wasn't black than people who voted for Obama because he was black. Why is it so hard to admit that Obama won because a greater number of people liked his platform better?Romney's campaign was a textbook example of how to lose an election through alienating millions upon millions of people.

dontcare

Ask Bin Laden if he is better off today than he was 4 years ago "John Kerry"

John Harville

I'm better off than I was after GWB was elected. Spend spend borrow borrow more spend spend more - all of it unfunded: two wars, the Medicare donut, tax cuts.
I'm better off than I was when President Obama took his first oath of office with the economy in shambles.
I would be even better off if Congress acted like something more than a group of dum bass obstructionists.
I don't disagree that his election was based, in part, on his race and ethnicity...and Hillary would have won because of her gender. Because the Silent Majority had changed it's identity when no one was looking and suddenly spoke up, his 'totally American' mixed heritage had a broad appeal. What you don't want to accept is that a great majority of 'totally American' voters of a variety of Melting Pot ancestry did not identify with the Sarah Palin mentality in 2008 and definitely not with the rich white boy aura of Mitt Romney - who really doesn't like most Americans.
He was elected, in greater part, by the fact the Republicans couldn't come up with a viable candidate after Huntsman dropped out.
I don't think your post is about racism... it's about elitism.

goofus

Somebody must have retired in 2008 with his great teachers pension. I find it repulsive when a party thinks it is being righteous when it comes to illegal aliens but all they are doing is reaching to a voting bloc.

deertracker

You must be real wise to know who people voted for and why. Please tell us why those that voted for Romney did so. Was it that massive tax break they were counting on? Was it the fact that all your SS taxes would be pretty much used as a voucher? Was it the fact that he knew how better to control your body than you? Was it the redefining of "rape"? Do tell please!

forkicksandgiggles

Re-Elected To Do What, Mr. Obama ?

Watching Barack Hussein Obama give his “last” press conference of his first term in 2013 was quite telling. If you closed your eyes and listened, you might have thought you were in a banana republic somewhere in South America. Obama has a definite “I” problem when he speaks. “I will not negotiate on the debt ceiling”. “I will not cut spending on entitlements.” “If I have to go around Congress on gun control action, then that’s what I’ll do”. “I have been encouraged to simply raise the debt ceiling on my own authority.” Blah, blah, blah. Oh yeah, ” I won the election; therefore, things will be done MY way.” This egocentric megalomaniac needs to be reminded of a few things to start the New Year right, I guess.

First of all, Mr. Obama, the voters in this country did NOT give you a mandate for anything. They simply maintained the status quo of Congress. Secondly, your power and authority are limited by the Constitution (you know, that document that you and your cronies promised to “preserve, protect, and defend”!) You are not our king or Messiah (at least to the people that I know), you have not been given the position of dictator (benevolent or otherwise), nor have you been given the power or authority to do as you please when you please. Thirdly, this is a nation of laws, Mr. Obama; and you do not have the discretion of which laws to enforce and which ones NOT to enforce. You too, sir, are also under the same law and dangerously close to impeachment (see Fast and Furious, Benghazi, Solyndra, etc.)

Your war against guns, Mr. Obama, is unconstitutional in any form that it takes. You want the Second Amendment changed, Mr. Obama? There is a procedure for that. Oh that’s right, you were a “Constitutional Law” professor once upon a time, weren’t you? Looks like you might have to brush up on your field of study, Mr. Obama. When the federal government goes out into the private sector and buys 1.6 BILLION rounds of .223 rifle ammo and 40 caliber handgun ammo when the government is trying to wind DOWN its last war, the people have a tendency to get a little nervous. You haven’t exactly been a pinnacle of transparency, Mr. Obama. Contrary to what your friends on the left may tell you, there are enough freedom-loving, God-fearing patriots still alive in the United States to make any kind of government intervention on our liberties one bloody fight.

You might want to remind Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that BY LAW, a budget is to be passed no later than April of each year. We all know that he’s been busy in the Senate blocking every reasonable piece of legislation to come his way, but he is 3 1/2 years late in getting a budget passed! Looks like ole’ Harry might just be in line for a little legal discipline himself! Oh yeah, I was just wondering that with the country’s economy going to hell in a hand basket rather quickly, if you have given any more thought to exactly how you are going to get us out of this mess without cutting spending?

You seemed to get a bit testy when any of the reporters at your last press conference pressed you for answers to the questions that they thought were relevant. Did any of your English professors at Harvard ever teach you to give short, concise answers? I know that you fancy yourself as Lincoln, but he didn’t recite the Gettysburg address every time he was asked a question. Why do you feel that you shouldn’t be questioned about your actions or your policies? Every President since George Washington has had to do that comes with the office. Maybe you’re trying to hide something?

You have shown by your actions in the recent “fiscal cliff” fiasco that you are not capable of compromise or face-to-face negotiations, nor are you flexible in your ideology (traits not conducive to an accomplishment-driven presidency.) You will find that the 2012 election will NOT be repeated again. Leadership is what this country needs now, not some ideologue who is hellbent on changing 200-plus years of the most successful and prosperous country in the world. America will not fall without a fight, Mr. Obama.

How are you going to explain to your middle class working base why their taxes went up when you promised them that their taxes wouldn’t go up even one dime? You have made too many promises, Mr. Obama; and you forgot that you are the “temporary leader” of a republic, not your own dynasty. You can be as arrogant as you want to be and as ruthless as you think you can be; but beware that, there are limitations to what you legally are allowed to do. Impeachment is a very real option, Mr. Obama.

The Big Dog's back

Gee, a real original thought.

Very well written, thank you!

You sure are throwing around the word impeachment alot, especially when our President just took the oath of office. Not going to happen. The people have spoken and made their choice. They did not vote for the status quo. Many more votes were cast for Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives. The Republicans only kept control because of jerrymandering. And where in the world did you get the idea that President Obama is arrogant? He is a good man who has been called every name under the sun by Holier then thou hyprocrites.

Remember it was written immediately after a revolution and we were breaking away from a colonial power, a moment frozen in time. Jefferson meant the document to be organic not static.

John Harville

Jefferson was not present for the writing of the Constitution.
In 1787 Shay's Rebellion was only put down because wealthy landowners paid to arm the state's militia. Retired Gen. Washington was concerned that the government under the Articles of Confederation could not command ANY troops. He pushed for the Philadelphia Convention and the writing of the Constitution to establish federal power.
Patrick Henry urged Virginia against ratifying the Constitution because there was no provision to keep their militias to put down 'colored' revolts (since slaves far outnumbered landowners).
In August 1791 farmers in Western Pennsylvania revolted against the federal government's tax on whiskey (the 'new' tea). PRESIDENT Washington ordered militias from four states into Pennsylvania to put down the revolt which continued nearly three years. In December 1791 the states ratified the Bill of Rights including the 2nd to affirm Article wherein the President as Commander-in-Chief of the state militias. In the summer of 1794 President Washington led 13,000 armed militia into Pennsylvania and finished putting down the citizen rebellion.
The Constitution was ratified in 1789. The Bill of Rights in 1791.
All this to point out, once again, the 2nd Amendment was designed to 'well-regulate' state militias to DEFEND the government AGAINST tea-party and similar citizen revolts.

John Harville

Just change 'Obama' with ';McConnell'....

"Impeachment is a very real option". Really jac kass? Why don't you tell us how that works and how you will accomplish it. Explain to all of us how impeachment does not remove the president from office - only makes the impeachers look stupid in history (as in the only two times it happened - and neither president was removed.)
C'mon oh great Constitutional authority, tell us how your threat comes to fruition with 55 democrats in the Senate.
C'mon big man. TELL US!!!

KURTje

He won again for valid reasons. Hello. This is Texaz. We want more dummies.

The Big Dog's back

Texas is poised to become a Democrat state. Once again the Dems will rescue Texas. Remember the Alamo!

arnmcrmn

Texas is and has been booming under republican leadership. Try again.

coasterfan

Really? Texas actually uses more federal funds per capita than it pays in federal taxes. LOL

Dr. Information

Dollar per capita.....Texas is on the bottom half, compared to the rest of the nation. More liberal states use federal funding than conservative states. Sorry, just the cold hard facts.

Figure from 2010.

John Harville

Doctor Doctor! 2010?

arnmcrmn

He won because of popularity because he is a wanna be celeb and because of race. Facts.

arnmcrmn

Bahaha. Your link is weak kid. Because some guy nobody knows named Castro says in 8 years Texas will be a democratic state? Bahahahaha, I just chocked on this crap I'm reading. And you trying it pawn it off as fact. Bahahahaha.

Hey this is just for you. Elvis is still alive, this website says so.

Bahahaha. When you can actually hold a legit argument, then you can speak to me.

deertracker

What race is he? Black or white?

John Harville

His race? All-American, blended in the Great Melting Pot, just like virtually every American - even Mexican-American Mitt Romney.

arnmcrmn

For big dog.
Top 3 best run states: Wyoming, n. Dakota, Nebraska. All of which have been Repubilcan ran for a long time.

Worst 3 states: Illinois, Rhode Island, California. All of which have been democratic ran for a long time.

From msn.......http://money.msn.com/investing/l...

Same results different site: http://www.marketwatch.com/story...

Those dems sure do know how to make a state boom.

Kasich has Ohio on the right track, to bad we voted Obie.

The Big Dog's back

From 1983 to 2012 in California a Democrat was Governor for only 4 years. In case you are mathematically challenged that means Repubs were in control 25 years. In Illinois from 1977 to 2011 a Democrat was Governor for 9 years. That means Repubs were in control for 25 years. And last but not least Rhode Island. From 1985 to 2011 a Democrat was Governor for 4 years. Once again that means a Repub was Governor for 22 years. So much for that theory.

arnmcrmn

Don't know where you get your information from but the legislature is the one controlling any and every state, not the governor lol. Surprised you didn't know that.. California legislature has been under democratic control for an unbroken 42 years and now has the supermajority. Again, when you can argue with valid facts, come back.

John Harville

armn... "the legislature is the one controlling any and every state, not the governor lol"
"Kasich has Ohio on the right track".
Do you just post whatever argument you think will fly at the moment? You and Paul Ryan don't seem to realize when you write it or film it, it is there for all to remember.

The Big Dog's back

And on the contrary from 1975 to 2011 in Wyoming a Democrat was Governor for 27 years, a Repub 8. Nebraska was split and North Dakota had more Repubs. North Dakota population? Less than 700,000. Los Angeles population? 3,819,720.

dontcare

3 of the least populated states.....wonder why

arnmcrmn

Can take a long time to build up a company but it all can fall apart in less than a year. Again. Republicans are in control and doing very well.

KURTje

Sure. Right after WW2 Americas's $$ went to Celeryville & other places for welfare/subsidies. Yeah those GOP folks want handouts to pay for their help. Just like some at the border states. People forget their history. Go live in Texaz if like that state so much.
