A Milan man is charged with rape for allegedly having sex with his 12-year-old relative when he was 16.
Police arrested Alan F. Thayer, 21, at his home Thursday night in the 13000 block of Jeffries Road.
He allegedly had sex on four occasions with the girl from 2004 to 2005, said Erie County Det. Nick Kotsopoulos.
Kotsopoulos said the girl was an extended family member who did not live in Thayer's home.
Years passed, and the girl said she had no contact with Thayer and never told anyone, according to police.
That changed when Thayer allegedly sent her a text message. The girl told a teacher at Western Reserve High School about what happened.
Erie County Sheriff's Capt. Paul Sigsworth said his office did not see the text message, but it did not appear to be sexual in nature.
The school called the Erie County Sheriff's office in March when officials realized the alleged acts occurred in Erie County.
In investigating the case, Thayer made some admissions to the crime, said Erie County Det. Jared Oliver. The detective would not elaborate further.
He said the events allegedly occurred in different locations at Thayer's home.
Thayer was also charged with attempted rape for an alleged incident in which the girl stopped him before he went further.
Thayer is scheduled to make his first appearance before Judge Roger Binette on Jan. 7, 2010.
