A neighbor, home on his lunchbreak, called 911 to report the fire at about noon after he noticed flames coming from the west peak of the barn.

He said it took only minutes for the barn to become fully engulfed. The barn was packed with hay and straw. It also housed a cow, a calf, chickens, two sows and piglets. All died in the fire.

The blaze spread to a small rental home on the property, which was also damaged. The barn was a total loss.

The siding on the main house on the property melted off, but the home was not otherwise damaged.

Additional cattle not in the barn at the time of the fire were also unharmed.

Pick up a copy of Wednesday's Register for additional details on the fire and the damage.

The poor animals. I wish he could have let them out before they all perished.

Good photos, Luke
