SANDUSKY

Facing ever-declining enrollment and a climate where taxpayers aren’t likely to approve additional levies, Sandusky Schools is considering closing Madison Elementary and consolidating the district’s two junior high schools next school year.

Precise details haven’t been released, and Superintendent Bill Pahl declined to provide a firm figure on the savings that might be realized by restructuring the schools.  But this much is certain: The bulk of the savings — estimated at more than $1 million — will come from staff reductions because about 85 percent of the district’s budget goes to staffing and salaries, Pahl said.
