Red Cross officials have collaborated with Sandusky Fire Department for the effort.

These "fire walks" will occur at Bayshore Apartments, Harbor View Apartments, View Point Apartments, McKinley Street apartments and Foxborough-area apartments. The program is made possible by the Rotary Club of Sandusky, which donated funds to reach 500 residents with fire prevention information.

Last year Red Cross volunteers responded to about 63,000 fires across the U.S. to provide comfort and basic necessities to more than 82,000 families.

In Erie County, the Red Cross assisted 42 families with fires and other disasters.

"The best thing you can do to protect your loved ones is to install smoke alarms and develop and practice a fire escape plan," said Pat Burns, Disaster Services Chairman for Firelands Chapter, in a statement.
