Stellar duo target Ohio's working class for Obama

Lest anyone forget the importance of Ohio's white, working-class voters, President Barack Obama sent a clear reminder on Thursday.

Make that two reminders: Bill (Clinton) and The Boss (Bruce Springsteen), two aging baby boomers still at the top of their game.

"No retreat, believe me, no surrender," Springsteen sang, performing without the backing of his E Street Band in a darkened gymnasium lit by a spotlight. The lyrics seemed aimed both at the president and his supporters.

With less than three weeks until Election Day, Clinton and Springsteen took the stage to rally support for Obama among the critical middle-class voting bloc in this tightly contested Midwestern swing state.

"For 30 years, I've been writing about the divide between the American dream and the American reality," Springsteen said. "Our vote is the one principal way we get to determine that distance."

Clinton implored voters to reward Obama for bailing out the auto industry, which has deep roots in Ohio.

"When you were down, you were out, and your whole economy was threatened, the president had your back," said the former president and a top surrogate for Obama.

Ohio is at the center of both Obama and Republican Mitt Romney's campaign strategies. Winning the state would put Obama on the brink of the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the White House. Romney, who has fewer pathways to victory than the president, almost certainly needs Ohio's 18 electoral votes if he hopes to claim victory.

Both campaigns are paying special attention to Ohio's working class — many of whom are white and don't have a college degree. They've made up about half of voters in the state in each of the last two presidential elections.

And they were well-represented among the 3,000 people packed into a community college gymnasium for the Clinton-Springsteen appearance.

"I think Clinton is key," said firefighter Matt Sparling of Parma Heights, Ohio. "He's got an amazing way of keeping it simple." Springsteen, he added, helps draw the crowd.

As Ohio officials opened the event, some in the crowd bellowed "Bruuuuce" — a standard fan shout-out to the musical legend.

Clinton, too, reveled in the chance to serve as Springsteen's opening act.

"I am qualified because I was born in the U.S.A. and unlike one of the candidates for president, I keep all my money here," Clinton said, referring both to one of the rocker's classic songs and Romney's overseas financial holdings.

Polls show Obama with a lead in Ohio, but Romney has made gains following his strong performance at the first presidential debate.

Each candidate has struggled to connect with white, working-class voters, in Ohio and elsewhere.

Nationally, Romney holds a strong edge among white voters with jobs and no college degree. But his advantage is narrower in union-heavy Ohio. A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll showed Romney ahead 51 percent to 44 percent among likely noncollege, white voters.

Those heavily-courted voters backed Republicans in the past two elections.

In 2004 in Ohio, 55 percent of white voters without a college education voted for Republican George W. Bush and 44 percent voted for Democrat John Kerry. Four years ago, they voted for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., over Obama 54 percent to 44 percent.

This time around, Obama's team sees opportunities to increase its levels of support.

The campaign has blanketed the state with television advertisements portraying Romney as a corporate raider who moved manufacturing jobs overseas. The state's 7.2 percent unemployment rate is more than a half-point lower than the national average. And the auto bailout is credited with saving thousands of jobs in the state.

"I'm thankful GM is still making cars," said Springsteen, whose songs often reflect the stories and values of the people who work in places like auto factories. "What else would I write about?"

In addition to Clinton and Springsteen, Obama is relying on Vice President Joe Biden to rally support among white working-class voters. Biden, raised in a middle-class family from Scranton, Pa., has been a frequent visitor to Ohio. He's scheduled to make a three-day swing through the state next week.

Romney has also relied on his running mate for help in Ohio. Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin native, has put his Midwestern sensibilities to use, dropping by college football tailgates and a Cleveland Browns practice. He also made a stop at a gun show. Ryan is due back in Ohio on Saturday.

Springsteen, an avid supporter of Obama in 2008, had planned to sit out this election. He never explained exactly what changed his mind in the campaign's closing weeks, saying only that he believes Obama understands the struggles of "everyday citizens."

The rocker kept his comments brief during a six-song set, which included "Youngstown", a song about the economic woes of the Ohio city. Seeking to hew a bit more closely to Obama's re-election message of shared prosperity, he also played a newer song that has become a staple at the president's campaign rallies.

"Wherever this flag is flown," Springsteen sang. "We take care of our own."

Here are a few points to ponder that you won't hear on the evening news let along the SR, and all the while we can debate this or that in regards to the economy etc. when all the while Obama has stripped us of our 4th and 10th amendment rights through the NDAA which allows the indefinite detention of AMERICAN citizens WITHOUT charges or right of due process! Now while I will agree that if your messing with terrorist groups or whatever without a doubt you need locked up and the key thrown away. But that being said your still a citizen and have rights guaranteed to you under the Bill Of Rights and the Constitution. So if you say "well that's how it should be if your a terrorist", well what if your NOT and just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time then what?? Btw have you seen the LIST of what constitutes a "terrorist" under Obama?? Sorry to say it's not just someone running around with TNT strapped to their chest trying to blow something up. It's people like you and me who have opinions and stand up to the gov't like the "Occupy Wall Steet" people, THEY are all on a terrorist list and if you owe $50,000 or in back taxes Obama has given the IRS that power as well to put you on that list. The ATF can now come in and confiscate EVERYTHING you own even if your not convicted of a crime but the mere being CHARGED with a crime and they don't have to return your property. All of these things come under Obama's 4 year reign of BS. Then it brings us to my personal "favorite" the Second Amendment... The man screwed up during the debate the other night and let his true colors come out of what his intentions are for his second term. First it was him wanting another assault weapons ban which is worthless other than to strip good people like you and me who play by the rules and don't break laws etc from owning any kind of semi automatic guns, which if you read what the last one entailed it also included HAND GUNS that pretty much weren't revolvers. He also made the comment about doing something about "the cheap handguns" that are used in crimes. Well gee Mr. Obama how are you gonna get rid of "cheap handguns" if your don't ban them as well?? Obama already has TWO Supreme Court justices that are ANTI 2nd Amendment, one of who is on record stating the 2nd amendment DOES NOT grant us the ability to own firearms! The other idiot is also on record stating that the Second Amendment and I quote "Needs reevaluated because when it was written they didn't have the fire power we have today"!! NEWS FLASH!! Back then EVERYONE HAD GUNS because if you didn't have a gun you didn't eat!! The reason the 2nd amendment was put in there was to give us an option if the gov't became to big for it's britches and started to become another tyrant and oppressive gov't like the one we fought so hard to get away from in the first place!! It wasn't written so we can all go hunting and trap shooting, it was to give WE THE PEOPLE the power to fight back against tyranny and an a oppressive gov't!!! So what that means folks if he gets reelected he is going to be able to put more anti gun people on the Supreme court who are BIASED and NOT impartial like they should be and there goes our 2nd amendment rights all together!! If you don't believe me Google it, because in the last year alone we have missed losing our 2nd amendment right thanks to the Supreme Court by ONE VOTE and ONLY ONE VOTE! Bet you didn't hear anything about that on the evening news did ya?? Also how many people have heard about the ATT or Small Arms treaty from the United Nations?? In case you didn't know the United Nations HATE and think anyone that isn't a soldier or policeman etc should not be allowed to have ANY guns what so ever. If you need proof look at the statue in front of their offices in New York City, it's a statue of a 357 magnum with a knot tied in the end of the barrel! This ATT treaty has been opposed for the past few administrations INCLUDING George W. Bush because it takes away our 2nd amendment right. But old Barrack Obama and Hilary Clinton said "oh no we need that" and so they pushed and pushed to get it done, but was thwarted thank god by the NRA and other groups like that and at least for now they put a stop to it. So what this boils down to is this, without the 2nd amendment the rest of them fall and mean NOTHING AT ALL!! So while things like the economy and foreign policy are important, none of it will mean a dang thing if we aren't allowed to have a voice any more because that was taken away right after the 2nd amendment was stripped from us and we no longer have a way to stand up and say NO! to our gov't. So think about it before Nov. 6th, because if you don't this very well might be the last election you ever get a chance to vote in!!

Calm down steeler-- did you also play football? Remarkable studies are coming out about the hazards of repeated blows to the head.

Meowmix, did you even read what he said? I read the whole thing.
Instead of trying to debunk it (because you cannot), you imply that he is crazy and should calm down?
I try to see all issues from everyone's points of view but, I dunno what one can do for you. Where does one go from there, in regards to salvaging credibility?

I would like to highlight a couple things from Steelerfan7272's comment post (above). And I quote:

#1 "Obama already has TWO Supreme Court justices that are ANTI 2nd Amendment, one of who is on record stating the 2nd amendment DOES NOT grant us the ability to own firearms! The other idiot is also on record stating that the Second Amendment and I quote "Needs reevaluated because when it was written they didn't have the fire power we have today"!"

#2 "If you don't believe me Google it, because in the last year alone we have missed losing our 2nd amendment right thanks to the Supreme Court by ONE VOTE and ONLY ONE VOTE!

As for me..What this tells me is that if Obama were to get re-elected, he would be able to appoint another anti-gun Judge to the Supreme Court..which would give the U.N. Small Arms Treaty agenda the majority control in the SCOTUS.
Even Obama, himself (in his second debate with Romney), said that we need to go farther than reinstituting the assault rifle ban, and do something about handguns as well.

Without the 2nd ammendment, the Constitution is just a restraining order which your psycho ex-boy/girlfriend (symbolizing the tyrants of history) could care less about.
Vote Obama OUT.

Actually,Risk, Obama said that he is in favor of banning assault weapons, not other types of weapons.
Then Romney said that automatic assault weapons were already banned. When Candy Crowley told him that automatic assault weapons are not currently banned. Romney said he was not in favor of assault weapons being legal and that he successfully got such a ban instituted in MA. He also said that parents, and especially single parents contribute to the problem of gun violence.

OMG fella. Do you have signs in your front yard?

Nobody is going to knock on your front door and take your guns away. I have voted for Obama and will stand next to you, gun in hand, if anyone tries. Unless your crazy?

The Gallup daily tracking poll on MSNBC had Romney ahead by 5 or 6. Maybe you missed that. How does one advance 11 points in a week? I will be glad when it is over and I believe Obama will win. We'll see!

I've been watching the news all morning. The only thing MSNBC has been quoting is the marist poll for Iowa and Wisconsin. I don't view their website because I figure the TV version is nauseating enough that I don't want to expose myself twice. LOL

Marist? What is marist? Go get a G.E.D.

The $831,000,000,000 economic “stimulus” that President Obama spearheaded and signed into law requires his administration to release quarterly reports on its effects. But “the most transparent administration in the history of our country” is now four reports behind schedule and has so far not released any reports whatsoever in 2012. Its most recent quarterly report is for the quarter than ended on June 30, 2011.

One wonders how the administration would treat a private citizen who acted like such a scofflaw in response to one of Obama’s principal legislative initiatives. It certainly appears that this administration, which is so very fond of regulating Americans’ lives — witness the 13,000 pages of Obamacare regulations it has already penned — doesn’t hold itself accountable to the same set of rules .
Section 1513 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the “stimulus”) explicitly states, “In consultation with the Director of the Office of Management and Budget and the Secretary of the Treasury, the Chairperson of the Council of Economic Advisers shall submit quarterly reports to the Committees on Appropriations of the Senate and House of Representatives that detail the impact of programs funded through covered funds on employment, estimated economic growth, and other key economic indicators.” (The head of the Council of Economic Advisors, currently Alan Krueger, is appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate, and works within the Executive Office of the President. He is the president’s chief economic adviser.)

Indeed, the old reports that the administration released begin, “As part of the unprecedented accountability and transparency provisions included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) was charged with providing to Congress quarterly reports on the effects of the Recovery Act on overall economic activity, and on employment in particular.”

Section 1513 of the ARRA further specifies, “The first report…shall be submitted not later than 45 days after the end of the first full quarter following the date of enactment of this Act….The last report required to be submitted…shall apply to the quarter in which the [Recovery Accountability and Transparency] Board terminates under section 1530.” Section 1530 declares, “The Board shall terminate on September 30, 2013.”

In other words, the Obama administration is required by law to submit quarterly reports on the “stimulus” through the third quarter of 2013. Yet the administration has apparently found it more convenient to stop after the second quarter of 2011 — more than two years early. Or perhaps it has just decided to put the release of these reports on hold until after the election. Either way, the Obama administration is now in violation of the president’s most prominent piece of legislation this side of Obamacare.

Why would the administration not want to release these reports? Presumably because they have shown what a colossal waste of taxpayer money Obama’s “stimulus” has been.

In January 2010, Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors reported that, using “mainstream estimates of economic multipliers for the effects of fiscal stimulus” (which it described as a “natural way to estimate the effects of” the legislation), the “stimulus” had at that point cost $263.3 billion and had added or saved about 1.8 million jobs, whether private or public. In other words, for every $148,000 in taxpayer money that had gone out the door, only one job had been added or saved — according to an estimate from Obama’s own economists.

Well "Meow Mix" I am glad you find it funny what I said but none the less what I said are facts even as much as I wish they weren't. But for the record I don't think Romney is the answer either but that's where my vote is going because Obama needs to go and at worse case it's another 4 years of the same BS as we have had but something has to give!

lol! Funny!

See? My post taken down. OK. Should I have said Nelson Rockafeller & Megan Marshack were making cookies, engaged in spritual sin? Still the those that say SR is a liberal news organization, well you'll figure it out.

Mr. D

So why is the R&R Express keeping George Bush muzzled? My goodness, one would think they'd have Georgie out there campaigning and promoting and reminding us how good things were under him and how Mittens will bring us more of the same. . . Then again, the gop doesn't want Bush opening his mouth, it would evoke thoughts of nightmares to come!!!

The Bush Institute has published a book called the 4% grow the economy by 4% annually. They are asking economists to check it out..but they are ignoring it.

The Democrats have become so good at being demagogues, that the crowd is drowning out any rational thought.
We will see how that turns out for them after America is "transformed," if Obama is allowed to continue to "move forward" against capitalism...when Big Business jumps ship to escape US and joins Russia (hot chicks there, btw) or China..two world powers where capitalism still thrives.

looking around

Thank you Gardenman for your post, I could not have said it better so I will re-post your words here. Well said.

I read and listen to thes comments by the Republicans, the conservatives or those on the right and they talk like 4 years ago we were living under the lap of luxury. It's like each mornign every American got up singing "Everything is Beautiful." Sorry folks I don't quite remember it that way at all. At this point 4 years ago under Republican George W Bush the banks were in dire straights. Some of the biggest banks in the US like Wells Fargo and Bank America were nearing collapse. Some people have forgotten that and truth was this country was so very close in November and December of 2008 to the entire banking industry going to a total meltdown.

Major corporations were set to collapse as well with ones like GM and Chrysler. Many want to say oh yea they should have........the result would not have been pretty here in Sandusky or other cities and town across Ohio and the US.

GWB was one happy man to leave the White House in Jan 2009 and leave the mess to an new president. No things are not all rosy today but the banks are open and none of us lost our savings and the US auto industry is doing well.

There was a time when Americans worked together for a common good and sometimes we do BUT in political circles this country has been so polarized that nobody seems to get alonw with anybody if they are not of the same party.

The entire article debunks what Gardenman says.
Pay particular attention to the paragraph which starts with "Now, unlike Obama, whose intellectual dishonesty can be striking at times, some of us are willing to concede that things need to be placed within a proper context."
(That paragraph and the rest of the article after..though everything before that is important as well)

This link sent me to an opinion piece written in July 2010. It has since been debunked, but you will likely keep using the same disproven statistics in hopes that if people see it often enough they will think it must be true.
