The last missing cat from Sandusky’s infamous summer “cat burglary” has been found. And Cedar Point deserves part of the credit.
Jade and another cat, Elsa, went missing July 1 after a window was left open during an apparent burglary at the East Jefferson Street home of Carl and Catherine Wolf.
On Sept. 7, the Register reported Jade was found by a Michigan State student who spotted her on River Road. The student recognized the cat from a “missing cats” flyer circulated at a local pizza restaurant.
The article noted Elsa was still missing, and it included photos of both cats.
When the article published, Kevin Hare, who works at Cedar Point’s main employee dormitory on First Street, noticed Elsa resembled a cat that had been coming by in the middle of the night to get tuna fish and cat food meals.
Other Cedar Point employees had chipped in food, and Hare had been feeding Elsa for weeks, said Linda Bache, a Cedar Point employee.
Hare showed the article to Bache, who knows the Wolfs.
“I said, ‘That is the cat, and let me make the call,’” Bache said.
The Wolfs went on red alert, waiting for the next call about Elsa’s appearance.
At about 5:30 a.m. Oct. 8, the call came.
Catherine showed up to find Elsa eating food near the security booth at the housing facility’s entrance. But the cat evaded capture by scooting under a fence.
Catherine then staked out the parking lot all night. She spotted Elsa, but again was unable to retrieve her.
Finally, the Wolfs borrowed a trap from the Erie County Humane Society.
That did the trick. They captured Elsa at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, when she ventured in for another meal.
“We were so thrilled,” Wolf said.
Elsa is looking a bit scruffy from her adventures, and she’s currently recovering under a veterinarian’s care, Catherine said.
