Smoking complaints in the area are burning out.
According to health officials from Huron, Ottawa and Erie counties, the number of complaintssince the statewide ban went into effect in May 2007 have decreased, but the rules are the same: Smokers in public facilities will be reprimanded.
State penalties range from a written letter of warning to a $2,500 fine and possible court action, which could result in a business being shut down. Individuals caught violating the smoking ban get one warning, and then a $100 fine for each additional offense.
