A five-year drug investigation culminated Tuesday with the arrests of 18 “mid-level” drug dealers in Sandusky, Ottawa and Wood counties.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine joined DEA agents, Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick and Fremont police Chief Tim Wiersma to announce the news in a celebratory press conference at the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office.

All claimed a hand in the investigation, which netted about $100,000 worth of mostly cocaine and crack-cocaine, DeWine said.

“This is a classic example of how to do it,” DeWine said. “This was a wonderful, cooperative effort.”

Said Wiersma: “It was wonderful to see everybody arrested. (At times) it seemed like it was never going to be over ... I’m happy it’s finally over.”

Said Overmyer: “Today was truly a great day in all of our counties. It was a great team effort.”

And Levorchick: “It was a great day today to take all these drug dealers off the street.”

Since 2007, undercover agents made 24 drug buys in Sandusky County, six in Ottawa County and four in Wood County, DeWine said.

Over the past several weeks, the cases were presented before grand juries in each respective county.

The end result: 34 alleged dealers indicted on 114 separate drug charges.

Eighteen alleged dealers were arrested Tuesday, while another five were already in state prison. Two others have been served their charges but not arrested yet, while another nine are still on the loose.

“It sends a message: ‘Don’t come here cause we won’t tolerate it — all of us will team up again together and, guess what, we’re going to get rid of you and we’re not going to stand for it,” Overmyer said. “We mean business and we stand for it together — the DEA, the attorney general, the sheriff and the chief.”

It’s unclear if the alleged drug dealers were in league together, or if all the cases are unrelated.

DEA agent Rodel Babasa said the seized drugs were coming from Mexico.

“I can tell you it has direct ties to the southwest border,” Babasa told a small gathering of news crews at Tuesday’s conference. “For Sandusky and Ottawa counties it is significant. Would it be significant at a federal level? Probably not.”

Super Judge

five years and all they managed to get was one hundred grand and eighteen people. more tax dollars wasted on a war they will never ever ever win.

Thanks for the comment Super Judge. I couldn't agree more. It's long past time for the state and the federal governments to re-think drug laws and the "War on Drugs."  This is the low-hanging fruit of law enforcement and it's a hamster wheel that does nothing to move society forward, in my opinion.

LOL, Super Judge & Matt - - u guys say all that, but once your child/brother/sister or whoever is close to you is hooked on that junk - you 2 will complain that local PD doesnt do anything to stop it or whatever.......or you to just dont wanna get caught in what your doin or have done just my view - -

What a huge waste of time, money, and resources.

I think it's a pretty bipartisan feeling that all the people locked up due to drug crime and all the billions spent on the drug war are a complete and total waste.

Let's put the violent offenders and thieves in jail, and have the cops protect us from dangerous people.

PD4Life, if your relative is hooked on it and a junkie, does that equate them to an armed robber, murderer, or rapist? I personally disagree, and feel one of the four above should not be in jail.

PD4LIFE

U APPARENTLY MISSED MY POINT, BUT ITS OK, HAVE A GREAT DAY

The reality is that in these situations, the crime does not end with these arrests. When these soldiers are removed, another steps up (or is chosen) to take their place.

This is emberrasing.Five years, really? Please post the expense for doing this excercize in comedy.I don't do dope barely know what pot looks like but give me five years and resourses and Dewine won't be needed to sell this fiasco.

Looks like you never did your spelling homework either.

Your right!   I missed an "m"  and the "a and e" are backwards!  Thank you!  That's what happens when you only get a 10 minute break!

Elemenopy

I wonder where all the drug traffic will move to....  oh yeah, to the area where there is no police chief and millions of tourists visit.  Thanks for the help!

Please, one more point.Just middle dealers no big boys in 5 years,Someone get this to Colbert.Just like the gov't to attack the middle class while letting the wealthy go scott free.

Super Judge

Your right pd4 the police are doing a first class job at removing drugs from the streets. Why looky here in just 5 short years they managed to rid us of 18 dealers. If thats their best effort then it is no wonder they are losing the war on drugs! In fact to say they are losing is a understatment, they are getting embarrassed! I would love to know the cost of this 5 year dragnet. Now we the taxpayers have to pay for their public defenders and then eventualy house them for their short prison terms. Now that I think about it we could of sent all the junkies to the Betty Ford center at half the price.

The SPD needs to come to my house. All they have to do is sit in the living room and watch my next door neighbor sell drugs to the dozens of cars that pull up every day.

Don't need 5 years to do that!!!

Hmmm, i am wondering why Erie County Drug Task Force wasn't doing something!!??  OOHH that's right, They did away with the funding for the Erie County Drug Task Force some yaers ago!   Good going comissioners!

Was this investigation successful despite Mr. "Fast and Furious" Holder and the Justice Department and their policies?

Let me get this straight....this took five years?

"Eighteen alleged dealers were arrested Tuesday, while another five were already in state prison. Two others have been served their charges but not arrested yet, while another nine are still on the loose."

And this is called PROGESS?  I don't get it?  FIVE were already in prison, so how is that progress? Nine are still out there.  Two haven't been arrested yet, but got served their charges....and they are proud of it?

I am not a real wizard on the law or police work, but it seems if you served them the charges, why not arrest them at the same time?

I don't see this at anything to be so happy about. In fact, arresting somone already in jail is really stupid, and not arresting someone you just handed charges to is even dumber, so why hold a press conference and tell everyone how dumb you really are?

Annoying squirrel

Wiredmama- ", so why hold a press conference and tell everyone how dumb you really are? "

Youre right.  Its much quicker and cheaper to just go on the blog sites and show everyone how dumb you are.

Factitious

Thirty-four buys averaging about $1000 in 60 months. Hopefully, this will lead them up the food chain, because this is not even the tip of the iceberg.

A Vacationland Federal Credit Union ATM was stolen from the cafeteria at Firelands Regional Medical Center.  The machine was recovered and since fell off of the Sandusky maintenance departments truck.  Since this is a public facility and security is of great concern these days, why hasn't this been reported on for public awareness.

Five years is a LONG TIME for the police. They steal the dope and use it for themselves. They use steroids to compete in police weight lifting contests. Laws do not apply to the police or DEA. They steal the drugs and money for themselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnZb5wi_jsU  No charges for the police officer. He probably got a job with another police department. Time goes by really really really really slow for the police who steal drugs and use it for themselves. HA HA!  Really really really really slow. Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood brownies. What time is it? HA HA!

HEY!! Will someone PLEASE make WIREDMAMA a cop or at least a journalist.....just so that she can show her creds????  GEEZ!!  This is what makes this blog so egregious!!!

Seriously...you put her on video one time (HUGE MISTAKE) and now she is the all-knowing, end-all to EVERY darn article on this blog!!!   Authority is something I can handle, but pure ridiculous, can't- get-off-my-couch, non-sequitur crap is so over-loaded!!  I appreciate intelligence.......absolutely ABHOR ignorance!!!!

wiredmama222

@allretoricanyway.....who are you to decide what comments anyone can make and where?  I didn't know you were made the "limit" police (I do NOT comment on every item, you exaggerate), nor did I realize that you held the rights to being the authroity on being right or wrong around here?

If you would like my credential, email me and I will be happy to send them to you ....any time.  I have plenty.

Who are you to say what is ridiculous, intelligent or ignorant?  Unless you can prove authority, I suggest you be a little less critical of others opinions and a letter more tolerant of others.

As you see, I was not the only one with the thoughts I expressed.  So I would be a little less quick to be so fast to say anything so nast next time. (unless it is just me you are out to get) .

Perhaps you might be more tolerant of others opinions differing from your own.

“ This is a classic example of how we do it” The police netted $100k in crack cocaine in five years, arresting 18 mid-level dealers, 34 alleged dealers. Great job. Say Barney Fife, can the public get a “itemized labor hour breakdown” I mean how much taxpayer money was crapped away in five years verses these awesome results? Lets see that’s about $1,700 a month for 60 months; bet we spent way more on manpower hours. Want to stop drugs, start with the CIA!
wiredmama222

@ annoying squirrel and allrhetoricalanyway.....Oh, please.  My being on that BTL and on this blog has nothing to do with my right to state my opinion  I am really tired of hearing about being on BTL.

If you have anything to say....go there yourselves.  I did have something to say so I did.

I respect your right to your comments and expect the same from your.  So please afford others the same including me.

Mike Dewine does not go out of his office.  He does not work DIRECTLY with the police or the DEA...he probably directs from ONHIGH . This man JUST put any further work with any other offices (and I suspect you work with cops or are cops) in jeopardy with this little stunt of his by having a PRESS CONFERENCE to brag about an ongoing 5 year investigation in which they go very little for their efforts.

Nice work to put any further efforts of any other counties in jeopardy should they be working, by flapping your gums and holding press conferences because YOU want to make a name for yourself.

So stop worrying about MY creditidentials and start worrying about HIS. He has BIG political plans.
