SANDUSKY

Some 16 million Americans served in the Second World War, but hundreds are disappearing daily.

With each one's passing, the memories they kept alive begin to fade.

The Department of Veterans Affairs reports that 2.9 million World War II veterans were still living as of Sept. 2007, but they are dying at a rate of about 900 each day.

About two dozen local World War II veterans and their spouses met Wednesday night for a dinner in their honor at AMVETS Post 17.

Sixty years later, these veterans still remember -- precise dates of deployment, names of transport ships and military-issued serial numbers. A few shared their stories.
