Regarding the MRDD home in Huron: We are greatful the Register is staying on top of this important local issue! Huron needs several group homes to serve our own disabled population. As per the Huron Council meeting, we must serve the needs of our own population! Now all we have to do is find a way.
Perhaps what we need is to agree to a revised definiton of "Family". In this day when a family can legally include any combination of adults and children caring for each other, how dificult is it to agree that a few disbled people living, supporting and caring for each other are indeed a family. Especially when they will have someone to watch over them much as a parent does.
The zoning laws were set up to avoid people from renting rooms to tenants. Not to keep the handicapped from sharing a home. If the zoning laws were fully enforced, every gay couple and many retirees sharing housing in Huron would have to leave town.
Isn't it amazing and disturbing that people can accept the everyday blessings that God gives most of us, and then turn around and fight to keep the disabled from being able to live in a home of their own. Fear of having the disabled as neighbors is unacceptable and inexcusable. Besides the disabled are already amongst us.
