The foreclosure crisis is still heating up, but a local judge is trying to help with a new 120-day cooling-off period.

Starting today, Erie County Common Pleas Judge Roger Binette is putting all foreclosure cases into a 120-day timeout. During the timeout, both sides will be ordered to get together to see if the case can first be settled out of court.

If the case can't be resolved, court action will resume, Binette wrote in a letter sent out last week to local attorneys.

The judge is reacting to Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer's call for every court in Ohio to use mediation to help as many people as possible save their homes.
