Erie County's emergency sirens went off at 11 p.m. Friday, but it was a false alarm, sheriff's deputies said.

A technician working for a private contractor was trying to find the source of an alarm appartently triggered by an earlier lightning strike when the warning sirens were inadvertently activated, according to the news release from the Erie County Sheriff's office.

In the release, the sheriff's office apologized for any inconvenience caused by the siren activation and said it is "working with the contractor to ensure that such an incident does not re-occur."
