PORT CLINTON

Power was restored at 11:45 a.m. Monday after a nearly three-hour blackout affected about 7,000 customers throughout Ottawa County, an official said.

The blackout occurred at 8:53 a.m. and affected Portage Township east of Sand Road, Catawba Island Township, and the Bass Islands, said Gary Mortus, Ohio Edison Area Manager.

The power failure happened after the electric company's tree trimming crew snagged a power line and broke it, Mortus said.

This led to "equipment failure" at a switch, resulting in the blackout, Mortus said.

OurGuest Inn, 2000 block of E. Harbor Road, was one of many businesses affected by the loss of power, hotel manager Mike Snider said.

"It got a little chilly," said Snider, whose employees wore their winter coats to keep warm.
