Erie County Sheriff's detectives are investigating an alleged rape in a park near Berlin Heights.

Erie County Sheriff's deputies were called out to Firelands Regional Medical Center after 3 a.m. Saturday when a 19-year-old woman arrived there with her mother. Capt. Paul Sigsworth said the woman told them she was raped by a 19-year-old Berlin Township acquaintance.

The woman told deputies the incident occurred while the two were walking down a trail in the park, Sigsworth said. The woman said she was unfamiliar with the area and didn't know the name of the park.

It is unknown whether alcohol was involved, Sigsworth said.

A sexual assault nurse examined the woman and collected evidence, but Sigsworth said he did not believe she was physically injured in any other way.

Det. Jared Oliver said it appears the two were on a date at the time.

The woman is expected to be interviewed today, which could provide investigators with more details. The man accused of the assault is required to call back to schedule an interview with his attorney.

In 2008 four out of every 1,000 women were victims of a rape, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Of those incidents, 4.6 percent occurred in an open area or public place.
