Thumbs UP and smile! for the cameras on school buses. Yes, one can get into the whole security vs. freedom debate, but we're asking schools to take charge of our kids not only in the classroom but on the road, and local school districts report the cameras' success in not only enforcing safety and proper behavior on the "cheese wagons," but in settling disputes over which little angel actually started the fight, often to the chagrin of the parent who's sure Little Johnny couldn't possibly have done such a thing.

We were going to say thumbs UP for Erie County Sheriff's deputies, but instead we'll say thumbs DOWN to the long-simmering hissing match that's resulted in them being called to make sure things stay cool at Kelleys Island polling places on election day. Erie County's island paradise has simmered for a decade or two over who really lives there for voting purposes, and it apparently has resulted in situations poll workers would rather not put up with. Sort it out, people. This shouldn't require armed lawmen.

Finally, thumbs UP for Cosmo, the therapy kitty who's now a calendar cat. Dick Goddard, the Fox 8 Cleveland weatherman who's locally famous as the driving force behind Vermilion's Woollybear Festival, publishes a weather calendar each year to help raise money for animal shelters, and March 2008 is Cosmo's month. As local celebrities go, Cosmo's an easygoing sort who provides some stress reduction for patients at local medical facilities and nursing homes.
