After reading the article by Tom Jackson on July 4, I finally have discovered the reasons that the country I grew up in has been given over to the hate, fear and greed mongers. Only two out of 20 people were willing to sign the "petition for political indifference," possibly out of fear, or worse, apathy. How much sadder that so few recognized this document as our Declaration of Independence.

I had wondered why more people were not upset our servicemen and women have, for centuries, bled and died to defend these words, the ideals of freedom for which this country is supposed to stand. Yet, many at home are quite willing to fritter it all away in the name of temporary safety and increased financial gain. How can we possibly keep this grand experiment in democracy alive when so few people even know what it is founded upon!

Shame on you! The next time you visit the library, might I suggest browsing through the non-fiction section and checking our a book on American history. Perhaps the next time you see..."When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another..." you will no longer fear signing it, but sign it large enough so King George is able to read it without his spectacles!
