Spending bill boosts higher education, tourism among other things

There's a lot for Erie County residents to like in the new two-year, $52.3-billion state budget that went into effect last week, agree state Rep. Chris Redfern of Catawba Island and state Sen. Randy Gardner of Bowling Green.

Redfern is a Democrat and Gardner is a Republican. The budget completed at the end of June managed to make lawmakers from both parties happy. Both sides pointed to tax cuts and boosts for important state programs.
