PORT CLINTON

An Ottawa County jail inmate has earned more time on the throne.

Daniel J. Garcia, 45, 1100 block of Albert St., Toledo, flushed his orange jail pants down the toilet.

He pleaded no contest to criminal mischief in Ottawa County Municipal Court on Monday. Garcia was sentenced to 30 days in jail plus restitution.

Garcia reported Sunday the toilet in his cell was clogged.

Corrections officers and maintenance personnel tried repeatedly to unclog the toilet. The next day a Roto-Rooter service person was called to unplug the toilet and found a pair of orange jail-issued pants. Since the pants were so close to the top of the system, the service person determined the pants came from Garcia's cell, according to the report.

Garcia was serving 60 days for petty theft charges and would have been released this Sunday. Garcia will serve the criminal mischief sentence consecutive to his original sentence.

Garcia did not give a reason for flushing the pants down the toilet.

Inmates have flushed pants and other clothing down the toilet before, but not recently.
