50 years ago, 1957: Two Erie County students were ranked among the superior students of the state with 253 who also took top honors in recently conducted final district state scholarship tests of the state department of education.
25 years ago, 1982: City manager Frank Link thought the Sandusky fire Department needed a new communication system to replace the present system, which was almost 25 years old. Link planned to ask city commissioners to allocate $40,000 allowing Fire Chief Owen Reed to buy the new radio system.
10 years ago, 1997: City Manager Mike Tann said that he's been told the wreckage of the Showboat Restaurant would be removed the following week from the foot of the mile-long pier. Tann recently spoke with the secretary of a lawyer representing Michael Kafantaris, who owned the former restaurant. The Showboat Restaurant was demolished in December. Since then, a rubble heap had stood where the restaurant was.
