SANDUSKY

For an hour Tuesday, Jeff Smith watched helplessly as firefighters cleared the smoke from The Better Half, his diner nestled in the 1100 block of W. Washington St.

The roof fire was spotted by a good Samaritan passing by at about 11 a.m.  Diners were evacuated, and the Sandusky Fire Department quickly knocked down the blaze caused by a broken strip of neon on the roof.  By 1 p.m. the smoke had cleared and Smith had orders up.
