Waugh pushes past age

FIT Challenger Sherry Waugh is the oldest in this season of the FIT Challenge.
However, at age 54 years old, she isn’t the oldest ever.
FIT Challenger Gary Mortus and Ken Gipe were both older in previous seasons – and both won the FIT Challenge.
While that news surprised Waugh, she was happy to learn she will be working out at the same gym as these previous champions: Bodi N Balance in Port Clinton.
“I have been fighting with my weight for years,” she said. “I have a picture from when I was 5 years old. I was thin and I was active, and a year later, it started coming on and it has been up and down ever since.”
At her heaviest, Waugh weighed 305 pounds. She dropped about 30 pounds on her own, but has been losing and gaining the same 5 pounds since.
“It has taken a year to get there. I know it is slow going, but it seems super slow,” she said. “My goal is to lose 60 pounds because that seems reasonable.”
Waugh hopes working out at Bodi N Balance with owner Trevor Tieche and his staff will jump-start her weight loss and healthy eating. She also stopped smoking right before the start of the FIT Challenge at the end of July.
The Marblehead resident struggles with eating too much at night. She lives with her mother and it is “monkey see, monkey do,” she said. “I eat whether I am hungry or not.”
Waugh works at AdWriter in Sandusky and sits for eight or more hours a day.
“I played volleyball when I was in high school and I still walk quite a lot,” she said. “I was working out at Curves for the past year. It is a workout and better than doing nothing at all, but it wasn’t challenging for me.”
Waugh knew she might get placed at Bodi N Balance since she lives in Ottawa County. She has been following the previous FIT Challenge seasons as “I have been thinking about doing it for a while,” she said.
“I was fine with the idea of doing Bodi N Balance until I saw the log pictures. It is intimidating.”
Tieche likes to use a log in his personal training sessions. The log has been both a source of motivation and trepidation for FIT Challenge contestants.
Waugh is also nervous about running a 5K, which is a requirement of all FIT Challenge contestants. The upcoming FIT Challenge 5K will be Oct. 26 at 9 a.m. at the Norwalk Reservoir.
“I have to admit it, I have never been someone who enjoyed running. Face it, I'm 5 foot 1 inches short and 54 years old,” she wrote in her blog.
But she doesn’t plan to let her age define her, even if it scares her a bit.
“Everyone in the FIT Challenge seems like they are in their 30s,” she said.
