Local nursing mothers celebrate World Breastfeeding Week

The old expression "think globally, act locally" is taking a new twist this week, as nursing mothers are scheduled to participate in an international breastfeeding event.

Since its formation in 1992, World Breastfeeding Week has become a global event geared toward awareness and education of breastfeeding. It serves as a platform to unify international groups within the movement to socially normalize nursing.

As a part of World Breastfeeding Week, an event known as The Global Big Latch On was created. Groups of breastfeeding mothers come together at registered locations around the world to nurse their children at a synchronized time for a full minute, in the hopes of breaking the record of the most mothers nursing at once.

In 2013, 14,536 women and their children came together and simultaneously breastfed, according to the event's website.

Firelands Area Breastfeeding Alliance (FABA) and the Erie County Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) department have scheduled a local Global Big Latch On event in Sandusky scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Battery Park.

"This is our first year doing it in Erie County," said Judy McCurdy, WIC Lactation Consultant and FABA member. "Huron county has had one for three years, completely organized by a breastfeeding mom, all on her own."

Other events have been organized for Norwalk, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bishman Park, and Clyde, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Clyde Community Park.

These events provide support for breastfeeding women by encouraging the promotion of nursing, and bringing them together to meet, laugh, and connect one another one latch at a time.

"We want to make people aware that there are a lot of breastfeeding moms in the area, and encourage others to respect them," McCurdy said.

The Global Big Latch On events are open to all nursing mothers in the area, and there is no charge to participate.
