Participants don’t have run as if they broke out of jail, but they don't have to walk, either.
The Jailbreak 5K run/walk will take place Saturday, August 16, starting at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is $15, or $20 on race day beginning at 8 a.m.
Assistant event coordinator Matt Wilson says that the event was started to help get people more active in the community.
“There’s a wellness committee here at work for (Erie County Human Resources Department) employees, but the event is for both employees and people in the community,” he said.
“We even have an 80 year-old registered,” he added.
According to Wilson, about 140 people participated in the run/walk last year and hopes that more than 150 people take part in this year’s event.
The proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the Xenia, Ohio, branch of Joni and Friends, a charity that helps people with disabilities. About $2,000 went toward the ALS Association after last year’s event.
Those who want to donate and not participate in the event can send their checks to Joni and Friends/ Ohio, 249 Bellbrook Ave, Xenia, OH 45385.
The event will begin at the Erie County Jail, going behind the Erie County Service Center, through Oakland Cemetery and end at the jail. Refreshments will be served at the end of the race with giveaways and prizes.
