Support info goes digital

In Erie County, getting printouts of child support payments is beyond life support.

It’s actually dead and gone.

A new state policy forbids local employees from providing people with hard copies of their child support payment history.

State officials now require people to digitally access their personal information on a secure website and print out documents on their own time and dollar.

“The state would rather us focus on getting people employed,” said Karen Balconi Ghezzi, executive director at Erie County Job and Family Services. “They see this as a time-consuming activity, and our time would be better utilized by doing other things.”

This new policy impacts upwards of 7,200 people. About 8,500 people today go through Job and Family Services to process their child support payments but only 1,300 individuals or so are currently registered on the website.

In the coming weeks, employees scheduled several hourlong workshops to familiarize these 7,200 people with the website’s nuances.

“They’ll learn how to access their information, set up an account and get information about upcoming hearings,” Balconi Ghezzi said.

People need their history of child support payments, for instance, during a court hearing or when they make a large purchase.
