Shop and stay safe

This weekend, Walmart customers can learn valuable safety information while shopping for groceries.

The June Safety Fair will be held at the Norwalk Walmart, 340 Westwind Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday as part of the store’s Safety Month program that began several years ago. The event is free and open to the public.

Dale Baker, the Safety Team Leader at the Norwalk retailer, said the event, first offered 20 years ago, was originally scheduled to coincide with Fire Prevention Week in October. After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the event and Safety week moved to June, designated National Safety Month by the National Safety Council.

“(The Safety Fair) has evolved,” Baker said. “We’ve added more events every year.”

Presentations at Saturday’s event include a fire and carbon monoxide safety demonstration by the Norwalk Fire Department, pet adoption and safety lessons from the Huron County Humane Society, summer safety by the Norwalk Parks and Recreation, and safety for senior citizens from the Huron County Enrichment Services. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be present to discuss boating safety and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will talk about home safety.

According to Baker, the event has always drawn a crowd.

“We get a lot of foot traffic, (so) people stop by,” he said.

“Our associates got positive feedback from people they knew from outside the store,” he said. “They would say that we’re doing good work here.”

This will be the third Safety Fair event this month. Previous fairs included blood pressure checks from Firelands Red Cross, free identification cards for parents featuring photos of their children from the Huron County Sheriff's Department, pictures with Teddy Trooper, Ohio State Highway Patrol’s mascot, and presentations on highway safety, car seat safety and a texting and driving simulator.
