Mayor seeks registry for gun offenders

Associated Press • Jun 20, 2014 at 8:16 AM

Jackson said he wants to give police and prosecutors the weapons they need to stop convicted felons from using guns to commit more crimes. The mayor at a news conference Tuesday also proposed a number of other gun-related laws. Spokeswoman Maureen Harper said there are other cities with similar registration laws on the books.

It’s unclear how these laws will withstand judicial scrutiny. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled in 2010 only state and federal governments can limit gun rights. There are already state and federal laws prohibiting convicted felons from having firearms.
