Red Wagon returns to Washington Park

The United Way of Erie County is hoping Sandusky residents will again pop over to the Red Wagon this summer.

Pam Brumbaugh, executive director of United Way of Erie County, said that the turnout varies depending on the event and the weather, but it remains a summertime tradition.

“We order around 2,500 boxes and sell over 2,000 boxes a year,” she said.

Since 1910, the wagon has served as a Sandusky landmark. The National Register of Historic Places donated the wagon to the City of Sandusky in 2002, and it was then refurbished using grant dollars.

Beginning this year, the Sandusky Police Department will host “Pop with a Cop” from June 23 through June 28. This is a continuation of the department’s “Coffee with a Cop” initiative that started earlier this year to allow friendly conversation.

Brumbaugh described the police department as a “huge partnership” with United Way.

“It’s cool that a local organization wants to do that for us,” Brumbaugh said. “It gives people the opportunity to talk with the local police and allows them to be community-minded.”

Eric Wobser, Sandusky’s new city manager, and his family will participate Saturday, July 12.

Member agencies of the United Way of Erie County have volunteered since July 4, 2003 with selling fresh popcorn and other refreshments at the wagon.

Other city organizations and individuals are welcome to participate. The Sandusky Register staff will volunteer their time the week of June 16 to 21.

In all, about 20 percent of the proceeds go towards the wagon’s endowment fund for future maintenance, and while the rest goes toward United Way.

Citizens Bank and Sandusky Packaging sponsor the program to cover the cost of popcorn, oil, salt and boxes.

The cart's normal daily hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. were chosen based on the typical downtown traffic.

“They can have popcorn for lunch (if they want),” she said.
