50 years ago, 1964: Barry Goldwater said low-yield atomic weapons could be used to burn jungle foliage and expose Communist supply lines along South Viet Nam's border. The Arizona senator was asked how jungle trails which can't be spotted from the air should be handled in the U.S.-supported war. 

25 years ago, 1989: Seeking a dramatic response to new Soviet arms reduction offers, President Bush intended to propose major American troop withdrawals from Europe. A plan to lift a high-tech trade ban against the Soviets was in the offing as well.

10 years ago, 2004: Sandusky's famous Red Wagon returned to its appropriate position after undergoing a facelift. A minor hubbub ensued over the engraving on the wagon's frame advertising peanuts - but popcorn was the only snack the wagon offered, the engraving was kept for aesthetic reasons in the $30,000 restoration.
